If you are looking at Tuscon/Sportage league, then buy the FWD version. They give relatively better economy than AWD/4WD options.
If mileage is more important, then go for the CH-R hybrid. It has the same engine and hybrid set-up as Prius 4th generation, and mileage is amazing. The 1800cc engine with electric motor has reasonable power as well. The downside is that space-wise it is a class/category lower than Tuscon/Sportage, so you will not get the similar space, and CH-R is a little tight inside. I personally feel it is more of a car than an SUV.
Other options like MG with their turbo engines will not do much better, and even if they do, the requirement to fill them with Hi-Octane will offset the little benefit they might have.
