What gear oil to use?

Hey guys,

I was just reading something on honda tech and found out that the thick Gear oil our mechanics and service walas usually pour into our manual gears is not at all recommended. Those oils are like 50-75w , very thick and end up damaging the tranny. The recommended oils include normal(mineral) motor oil or Honda's MTF(manual transmission fluid).

What Gear oil you guys used in your manual transmission? I have used the thick oil in my mehran and didnt encounter any problems.

Please enlighten the forum with your personal experiences.

anything from caltex or liquimoly even total or if honda gives any gear oil it itself manufactures. never use zic gear oil. used it (confirmed it was original) and gears became rough. i switched to total on advice of an oil store and they became as smooth as butter. btw i got zic from suzuki dealer on his recommendation

All right! I never payed alot of attention towards what type of gear oil i am using in the past. But i know that they all were very thick. I am assuming Caltex & liqui moly are all thin oils?

I am changing Gear oil on my 2002 city for the first time. I have no clue what type of oil was used by the previous owners. Gears are not giving me any problems but it just bugs me that i don;t know what type of oil my tranny is running on. Since the car has 150k miles on the ODO i dont know if the oil was every replaced.

Honda manual transmissions use SAE30 engine oil to lubricate them - do not use any sort of gear oil in them ever.

Where the manufacturer recommends gear oil - only use it in that application, e.g. your Suzuki Mehran requires API GL4 SAE 75W90 gear oil, so use that in it.

There are some manual transmissions that use ATF in them (some Land Rover, MB, BMWs etc)

Just the information i needed ! Thanks bhai. One more thing, should i replace the existing oil or just get the level checked and top it up?

Mein n suzuki walon say SAE90-GL4 dalwaya hay but gear say sound ana start ho gae hay... Much worried what the problem is

i asked them to change gear oil too but they said it will start giving sound if you change oil. so i did not. i dont think its something to worry about. but yet consult with members i am newbie in cars just shared my experience.

They said it wont affect unless you put faulty oil in it.

You need a better workshop. Gear oil is recommended to be changed every 2 years or 20,000 kms - whichever comes first. Please make sure the gear oil you use is compatible with your car. Your suzuki takes API GL4 gear oil in 75W90 or 80W90 or 90 viscosity. You will see how much its beaten up and has particles floating in it when you change it.

The mechanics tell you to not change it because their ustaads who worked on Land Rovers, Mercedes Benz, Armstrongs, Leyland/Morris, Fiat etc were befuddled as those cars used special gear oils e.g. the old mercedes use ATF in their manual gearboxes, the older Land Rovers use gear oil while the newer ones use ATF - this is the reason they left it alone because oils at that time were hard to find and hence the cars got screwed up.

Dont wait, buy some nice gear GL4 gear oil and get it changed.

My Honda City has been creating strange noises while idling in morning. I was of impression that maybe Radiator Fan was creating those noises. I am very particular about changing the gear oil on time and never let it exceed 40,00 km. Honda Mechanic Told me that noise was coming out from gears and need to change the gear oil. I had been using ZIC gear oil till date but he advised against using ZIC and told me to buy Honda’s gear oil. Well, I went and bough few packs of Caltex gear oil and after replacement, all the noises were gone. Only reason, I did not buy Honda’s gear oil was that first its bit expensive Rs 900 per pack and second Honda guys are fond of promoting their own products whereas I felt that its one or more the same thing outside. I am going to do some research to find out the difference between both.

I have always used Caltex rpm Delo 400 or Delo 500 (silver and gold now) in Honda manual gearboxes. They work beautifully with it - you will actually feel the gear lever actually slide into the next gear itself. btw I also have the habit of gently using the gear lever, using it really fast will make your gearbox wear out earlier.

With apologies to the poster: Xulfiqar which gear oil for Mehran? I'm using ZIC at present, mileage is 112k. Also I been using ZIC A till now should i switch to a diff viscosity (10W-30) as the engine is older? though running excellent.

If mehran is new (2012 or later Euro ii), use zic x7 5w20 in rs 2089/3L. . .if model is middle era like 2006-2012, use 10w40. . .if more older use 20w50

all lubricants of HONDA are made by Mobil Askari Lubricants (MAL Pakistan Ltd.) as out sourced by it! they dont make it by themselves
