Vespa VBB DIY Restoration Project

This thread is going to showcase my ongoing project of a 1963 VBB Vespa 150. I bought it off a gentleman whose father used to own and ride it but after his demise it was parked for over 2 or 3 years.

I plan on keeping this project as DIY as possible. Please note that I have no prior experience of a full DIY project nor have I ever owned or worked before on a Vespa or matter of fact, a two-wheeler. I am going to rely entirely on the belief that I can do a much better job than any roadside mechanic, the internet, and the Haynes workshop manual.

I hope that this project will be a great learning experience for me and I will appreciate the help I get from the Pakwheels community and fellow Vespa owners. All constructive criticism and helpful tips are welcome.

Now, I present to you the subject.
This is day 1 of the purchase (31-Jan-2015)

Initial observation: Engine is seized. According to the owner it ran when parked, so my thoughts were that due to the long period of time it did not run, the piston might have stuck to the cylinder walls. I was hoping to get it running before i tear everything apart.

So, i removed the spark plug and sprayed some WD-40 inside the chamber and left it overnight. Next morning tried rotating with flywheel nut and it moved. But, it seemed that the kick was still very much stuck. I decided not to waste any more efforts and begin with the tear down.

Update: 15-Feb-2015

The plan is to address the engine and mechanicals first before moving on to body work.

Notice the gunk on the engine!

Cleaned the entire engine in preparation for splitting it open. Sadly, by now i was running out of day light so i organized everything so i don't lose the little bits and pieces.

Deadlock!

To proceed with the engine tear down, it seems I am need of some specialty tools. Namely, a flywheel puller. Please advise where I may acquire this tool. Also, it seems I will be needing a special socket to undo the castle nut.

get some nice polyethene packets. store the small bits in them and label them. really helps

btw, you can make the engine run again, without opening it.

squirt some oil from the spark plug hole. then rotate it from the nut on the flywheel. i used a rod and socket to spin the siezed engine of my dad's vespa.

the real thing to check is the fuel system. see if you get fuel to the carburetor

I already got the engine rotating with the technique you mentioned but the kick was still stuck.

this tool is sold on carts and in shops too - along with the cd70 magneto puller and cg125 centrifugal filter 4 prong tool, in patel para this tool is available in vespa "ape" parts shops, tell them you want the magnet puller for vespa and also "star puller"

Good DIY, Keep it up, but you are going to get beaten up for sure by your MOM for messing up the floor use a plastic sheet or newspapers
