The 900 club: cars with over 900HP

The Icona Vulcano can be optioned with two different engines. The first and definitely most impressive powerplant is a front-mounted V12 engine mated with an electric engine helping to deliver a claimed 950hp. The Icona Vulcano can then be fitted with a much smaller and less powerful V6 engine.
These unique powerplants are courtesy of motorsport engineer Claudio Lombardi who was also responsible for many of Lancia?s WRC championships and Ferrari's 1990's Formula One engines.
Additionally, the Icona Vulcano will be offered in two different specifications, the first of which will be road-legal the other a track-day only machine. Interestingly, the road-going model will actually be the V12-powered 950hp Vulcano, while the racing version will be powered by the small V6 engine combined with two electric motors to deliver an extremely impressive 870hp.
Icona claims that the former can sprint to 62mph in less than 2 seconds while the racing version should hit 62mph in 2.9 seconds with its V6 engine powering the rear wheels while the two electric motors then power the front wheels. Both cars are then expected to hit a McLaren P1 and Lamborghini Aventador equalling top speed of 217mph.

Hennessey- The 900 club: Hennessey Venom 1000 Viper But before the Venom GT came the Venom 1000 Viper. And as the name suggests, it was based on the Dodge Viper. In stock form the Dodge Viper in question provides 600hp courtesy its 8.4-litre V10. Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE) doubled this to 1,200hp. Only 24 were made and each owner was treated to a day of driving tuition from a tame racing driver. Which was probably a good move.

Switzer- The 900 club: Switzer GT-R E900 What you see here is a Nissan GT-R. But not just any old GT-R, this is the Switzer E900, with E standing for ethanol and 900 referring to ? yep, you've guessed it ? the horsepower. 900hp is almost double the output of the original Nissan GT-R it?s based on, with the ethanol fuelling helping with the extra boost. The engineers also claimed the green fuel improved the air quality in the workshop. An unlikely side-effect of car modifying.

Barabus- The 900 club: Barabus TKR 0-60mph (approx. 97kmh) in 1.67 seconds. That's right ? nought to sixty in one point six seven seconds. You'd struggle to say that quicker than it takes the Barabus TKR to perform the feat. Allegedly. Its twin-turbo 6.0-litre V8 engine produced 1,000hp, enough for a top speed of 270mph (approx. 435kmh). The promise was short-lived though as Barabus disappeared, taking the TKR with it. A glimmer of hope was raised when the follow up Keating TKR emerged two years later, but that?s also failed to actually materialise.

9ff- The 900 club: 9ff GT9-R What do you get if you drop two huge turbochargers on to a 4.2-litre flat-six engine? Well, if you're German tuning company 9ff, you'll get a Porsche GT3 developing 1,210hp. And don't worry ? you're not seeing things ? amongst many, many other things that roof has been lowered to improve the 911's aerodynamics. Only 20 were ever made.

Weineck- The 900 club: Cobra Weineck Looks like an AC Cobra, right? But this one has been fettled by Klaus Weineck, a master mechanic turned car builder. Powering this Cobra is a 12.9-litre ? yes, 12.9-litre ? V8 engine that pumps out 1,100hp. So that's Veyron-taming territory in a car that does without any form of turbo or supercharging. In a car that only weighs 1,000kg and produces 1,299lb-ft of torque. Even a standard AC Cobra 427 has the ominous reputation for being a ?widow maker?. Surely this creation makes Klaus Weineck the grim reaper?

Locus- The 900 club: Locus Pl?thore Canada's first supercar, the Locus Pl?thore was launched at the Montreal Auto Show in 2007 and quickly became known as the 'Quebec Bomb'. Made entirely from carbonfibre, it was powered by a Chevrolet-sourced 8.2-litre V8 engine that would produce 750hp. Not enough for the 900 club, until you discover that this could be increased to 1,300hp via the options list. If Jacques Villeneuve was a car, he'd probably be a Locus Pl?thore.

Zenvo- The 900 club: Zenvo ST1 Zenvo will tell you that the ST1 is 'a real supercar'. And what's more, it?s '100% built in Denmark'. Now Denmark is perhaps more associated with bacon, butter and colourful building blocks, but the ST1 promises to pack a serious punch. Its 1,104hp 7.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine guarantees it membership to the 900 club, but this thing will also reach speeds in excess of 230mph (approx. 370kmh). Only 15 are to be built, so if you fancy a 100% Danish car, the ST1 is for you. Its ?1.2m (approx. $1,836,000) price tag would buy you an awful lot of those colourful building blocks, mind...

The Concept One is currently a prototype, which will be available in limited quantities for the hefty price of $980,000.
On paper, it has other-wordly specs, putting other electric supercars to shame: Its 1088 hp engine takes you to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds, with a top speed of 190 mph.
Even more impressive, the car can travel a solid 372 miles on a single charge.

Shelby- The 900 club: Ford Mustang Shelby 1000 In 2012 Shelby America introduced the world to the most powerful Shelby ever built, the Shelby 1000. So called because it puts out a whopping 950hp. And if that isn't enough ? there's a track version with 1,100hp. Shelby took the base 650hp GT500, uprated the 5.4-litre V8, upgraded the cooling, fitted a new exhaust system and added a new supercharger. 100% American muscle.

SSC- The 900 club: SSC Tuatara 6.9L V8 SSC's response to the Bugatti Veyron taking the top speed crown away from them? The slightly insane Tuatara. The facts ? 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds, a claimed top speed of 276mph (approx. 444kmh) and a redline of 9,200rpm. Oh and the important bit for this gallery ? 1,350hp.

Rimac- The 900 club: Rimac Concept_One As supercars go, this one is up there with the best of them when it comes to styling. It originates from that automotive powerhouse ? Croatia ? and only 88 will be built, each one costing a cool $1 million (or ?664,000). The major difference between the Concept_One and the other cars in this gallery is the fact that it's 100% electric. With a 92kWh battery powering each wheel, the output is the equivalent of 1,088hp. It also has a top speed of 190mph (approx. 306kmh) and will reach 62mph (approx. 100kmh) in 3 seconds (that magic number again).
