Suzuki Jimny/ SJ410 Restoration Journey

Salam everyone

Creating this forum to update you guys about the restoration journey of my Suzuki Jimny aka Potohar which I have purchased back in March 2023

Background - I always wanted to keep an old car for restoration and daily use as well, although I don’t have any experience or technical knowledge in keeping old cars where I will be needing your support , I was looking for Toyota corolla 86 or Suzuki Jimny and was saving money but was not getting permission from family , this time I was finally able to convince my family and they allowed me to purchase this car

About the car

• Born in 1986
• Home base - Pakistan, Lahore
• Engine 1.3L, carburetor
• 5 Speed
• Four Wheel Drive
• AC working

The previous owner had it for more than 20 years but it was not maintained properly be it the body, engine or suspension, my plan is to restore the car starting from engine repair, suspension work and then body work along with electrical work and cosmetic changes, I have started working on the mechanical work and it is almost done, will share the pictures along with the parts which I am collecting.

This is the current condition of the car, for now I am getting the mechanical things fixed, will start working on body afterwards

So following are the list of things which are done so far

• Steering box replaced, the old one was not working
• Steering shock installed
• New front wheel bearing
• 4wd shaft installed and all shafts were repaired along with addition of some missing parts
• seals from back wheels and differential were replaced
• gear box along with 4wd gear box, seals were replaced along with new gear oil
• engine tuning and carburetor repair
• Air filter pipe was altered as we were not able to find the original air filter pipe
• Break service along with hand break

Now the car is 100% ok in terms of mechanical work, just need to wash the radiator and need to repair the cover of radiator fan

4wd update

• 4wd was not active when I bought the car
• the previous owner handed over the shaft but one part was missing (that I came to know when I was about to fix the shaft)
• bought the missing part from Bilal Ganj Lahore for Rs 2000/-
• I never used a 4wd car before so I was driving it on 4H for about 6 kms but google helps
• 4wd light on the meter cluster was not working, bough bulb. holder and the switch

I am still looking for an original 4wd gear knob with marking on it, can anyone please guide where I can find it in Lahore?

Parts update

I have started purchasing some small parts, will be buying major parts once the body work will be started

• Lug nuts
• Wheel cups
• 3rd stop light, which we see in Jimny 96
• Front grill (have bought two will select at the time of body work)
• original fog light switch
• Jimny fender logos
• Front bumper
• Back lights
• Fog lights
• Side fender and bumper indicators
• Some fake Japanese stickers

• Wide angle mirror
• Cabin light

Bought some new parts from Bilal Gunj last Saturday

• Front seats 96 model, will repair the existing back seats for now
• Back bumper
• Steering rack with ignition (96 model as I want to install EPS, which I won't be able to fix in my existing ignition switch
• Back wiper, motor and switch, will cut the existing back door to install the motor
• Radiator fan cover

This thread makes me wish there was locally assembled version of new Jimny. I would love a localized reasonably priced 5-door fat boy version of it.

Denting work started, rust everywhere surprisingly floor is fine

Dunno about Punjab but all the jimnys and potohars in Karachi are rusted beyond repair unfortunately.... Potohars usually started to rust from the factory. But these cars are great offroaders and I have many memories of going to interior Sindh in a Potohar. Only problem was the rickshaw type ride of the pkdm potohar

This specific car was also in Karachi for about 20 years, maybe this is the reason for rust

Could be... But this is still minimal rust I'm my books. I own a Suzuki hiroof that's so rusted whole chunks of rust are falling out.

Got interior panels of 1996 Suzuki Jimny, have to do holes to fix them, also got the mirror fixed (not wide angle now )

My speed o meter and trip meter is not working, can anyone in Lahore please suggest a good meter repair shop?
