Shell Helix Ultra (Rs.2200/4 Liter) Synthetic Oil

After checking the discussion on synthetic oils (on PW) I decided to give it a try.
Costed me 2200 and I was shocked to see it change its colour and lose its lubrication after just =7000 kms= !!
This oil is rubbish. Dont go for it.
(I used it in my 6 month old santro)
Please suggest a suitable alternative (synthetic, but not zic a+)

heheh bro all fully sythentics lose their color very soon especially in smaller engines!i use mobil1 5w50 in my alto n it turns dark after 4k! turning dark does not mean oil bas kharab ho gaya hai n tht its time 2 change!its judged by the chiknahat left in it n as long as it doesnt smell burnt!
and how can u say it lost its lubrication?

oil has to change its color,, if it doesnt change its color that means its not doing its job.

sorry bro, i want to see it pickin up dust in engine with usage. and zic a+ shows it picks up dust. (i dont drive a worn out engine either)

bro usually ive seen ppl over here baray fakhar seh boltay hein mera engine oil 7,000km baad b aik dum golden nikla blah blah blah! what does dis mean is tht suppose 2b good or bad?
as far as i can understand when it gets dirty its dng its job n the oil is working but i dun understand keh log kehtay hein 8k+ keh baad b oil golden nikalta hai!yeh kaisay ho sakta hai?

look at the air and fuel polution here,, its not same as in Japan or elsewhere. all that goes into yr engine when you start the engine,, it sucks air.

we need to change oil quick due to more polution.

eg of airfilter:

Toyota branded air filter is so expensive they are not in high demand in other countries, not bought so commonly in japan because there fiter stay clean while ours get dusty if we follo another vehicle close and dust flies from its wheels... just a thought.

keep yr area clean and grow grass dont drive on dust and yr car will run better too

you info is wrong. oil in smaller engines takes much more time to change color than in bigger engines like 6 cylinder or 8 cylinder. I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am (2200cc 4 cylinder) and my friend has a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix 5300cc 8 cylinder) and oil in Grand Prix changes color just after 3000-4000 km and starts to burn. I have tried shell, WORST OIL. Mobile 1, ummm not bad(changes color fast).. but castrol synthetic oil is reall good.

Oil changes it's color due to heat, dust and other factors not just km. You can drive a car 10000 km on highway and its going to be better than a car driven in city with 5000 km.

Synthetic Oil is good but its best if you are using it in cold weather. If you live in pak Its hot there, you dont need synthetic oil. Buy regular synthetic oil and stick with it. You are gonna be 2200 rs if you are buying synthetic oil. Imagine if you can get regular oil for 1500 rs and syn for 2200 - Save 700 rs on each oil change. If you can easily afford 2200 rs each time... than go for it, but I dont recommend it.. and yes 7000 km is a lot even if you have a car with small engine its gonna change color. You shouldn't change oil until it turns reddish/brown.

bro i think a 1000cc car wud have to worn harder compared to a 1600cc car to reach the same speeds!upar seh 1000cc engines par strain zada hota hoga coz aik toh tum cng par chalatay hein which robs the car of its power n upar seh phir hum car ko full kheechtay hein har gear mein n drive at high rpms this strains the engine n makes it work even harder...upar seh i think a 1000cc alto engine wud generate more heat too coz aik toh aus ka engine compartment chota hai hardly any room for ventilation n upar seh we expect it 2 drive like a 1300-1600cc car so log full kheechtay hein aussay tht even causes the engine to run zada gharum!
idar tak when i drive my alto all day long n park it shaam ko n remove the oil filler cap steam nikal raha hota hai where as i do the same with my civic steam nikalta hoga halka pulka likun dikta nai hai! (and meray alto ka gasket nai urawa tht is steam frm the oil n not fog tht builds up jub gasket farigh ho jata hai)

Your info is totally wrong. Where do you get all this info from? first of all a 1000cc engine would generate less heat than a 1600cc engine because its smaller in size. Not so much difference like you would see in 4 or 6 cylinder.

By the way cng burns a lot cleaner than gasoline/petrol and reduces vehicle maintaince. Oil changes may not be needed before 20,000 km (12,000mi)

And... by cold I meant -20 -30 ..this is when oil starts to turn thick. Like in pak even in winter temps go down to -2 -3. Rgular oil is just fine. 2200 rs on synthetic oil.... I would never recommend that.

The purpose of oil is to lubricate engine and cut down on wear and tear in the engine. A regular oil would do just fine!

buy good regular oil like castrol and stick with it. You will thank yourself for sayin 600-700rs on every oil change.

yar all i can say is tht u seriously need 2 come back 2 paksitan n keep a crap pak suzuki 1000cc car! moo ka fire marna bhoohat ahsaan hota hai while living abroad coz u get quality stuff in everything tht u see buy hear feel etc etc!

id opened a topic by the name of results after an engine flush or sumthing like tht see tht keh idar engines ka kya haal ho jata hai of 1000cc cars!by 10,000km my engine oil is in the darker shades where as after 12,000km meray civic keh oil ka rungg abi b rusty brown hai n both use mobil1 so wats ur explanation for this?both pass by the same road same conditions same everything! so wat du u hav 2 say?
heheh bhaisaab aap jag gai idar if we extend our drain intervals of oil to 20-30k meri car ki zubaan bahir latkiwi hogi!coz our conditions come under the extreme driving conditions...over here ppl make freq short trips,idling bhoohat hoti hai etc...the car's engine oil doesnt get enuff time 2 reach its optimum operatiing conditions where all moisture n all is removed!n dat takes around 20km 2b done n over here ppl reach their destinations within 8km!so thus more acids etc r formed since its unable 2 get rid off the moisture n other crap!

All the Shell oils are waiste of Money, worst oil in Pakistani market !
Buy Caltex or Zic, Good oils at good price !

Well since you are talking about hands on experience I just checked the oil in my car 7300 km and its kind of brown now... In pakistan with all the heat and @ 12,000 you are saying the oil is still rusty brown.. well sounds funny ... lol ... Last oil change I did was after 10500 km with castrol synthetic and the oil was really really dark. Since you said it your self things are clean here.... if I you have to change oil @ 10000 km here than what about pak? Dust, Heat, Road conditions! If I was in pak I would just use a regular oil and change it after every 5000 km.

Btw dont know about you, I am not a mechanic yet but I'm studying to be one. Went to college for 2 years and got Automotive Service Technician diploma.

yaar idar castrol aint a very popular brand!idar bas all ppl know is caltex ya shell!
yar the logic 2 wat m trying 2 say is tht one oil ka dabba costs around 1200rs mayb over here duno rate confirm nai hai for 4lit which lasts around 5000km as u sed!n mobil1 or liquimoly costs 2400rs n lasts around 10000km!bas yeh farq hota hai keh u get a superior oil with more achay khasay yummy detergents such as supersyn technology blah blah n secondly it costs u the same getting oil changed 2 times or jus paying 2400rs in 1 shot n being farigh for 10,000km all u have 2 do is change the oil filter at 5,000km!

yes i think its getting clearer now fuel economic engines keep oil cleaner longer,, while higher HP stuff in same displ need clean oil before everyserious run cannot compare oil maintanance of both..

each engine has its own oil usable life if you get into engine specs.

i use 2 different Toyota engines both 1.6l but both are so different design engines from each other and oil change times are different too.

@displacement, Castrol for Pakistani Market is a mediocre oil, No oil beats the "Value for Money" of Caltex oils, if you even use its 5 star (least grade) , you will see that it doesnt loose its viscosity that early, atleast double the life of Shell.

Zic is also No less

Well the worst thing I have heard is in pak they sell fake oil. Sum people have told me they just refine the oil and sell it as brand new. :S dont know if thats true or not. Hope dealerships don't do that. anyway

let me tell you one thing. Not all companies have their own oil. Who knows caltex might be buying their oil from another company and label it as caltex?

my brother used to say Motomaster is really good brand for oil filters. Yes its popular in Canada but you know who makes filters for them? FRAM!!!! they get it from Fram and label it as Motomater. Trust me all the major brand oil is same. One might add a few additives.. thats it.

yeh bro u heard it rite these days the market is flooded with du number oil!idar tak keh mobil1 b du number bik raha hai market mein!soocho yaar idar yeh haal ho gaya hai!the reason y ive switched frm mobil1 to liquimoly is bcoz ab tak liqui ka du number nae aya!
yaar the mobil1 du number is such a dito copy keh paychaan hee nai pata bandha agar fake hai ya original!i guess only tht person will b able 2 tell the difference whos been ripped off a couple of times n has been sold fake stuff for the price of an original!its better 2b safe than sorry dats y i switched to liqui its as good as mobil coz both r neck 2 neck in the race of which 1 is superior!sab ki approvals b same hein for eg porsche,benz,bmw blah blah n the acea blah blah specs!
the 1 tht i use is synthoil high tech 5w40! mobil1 was 5w50!

the honda dealership ppl they sell their oil by the name of honda motor oil blah blah n fool ppl into thinking yeh oil khas aun ki hondas keh leeyay banawa hai by only having a nyc fancy sticker on the can tht says honda n has stuff made on it!where as the oil tht they sell is made by caltex for them!the same havoline oil is repackaged in honda keh dabbay and sold 2 customers n khoob thook lagatay hein customers ko daba kar n customers apnay par thook lagwatay hein!agar customer ko kaho caltex pump seh lehlo oil the person will b like nai nai fazool oil hota hai aun ka but if u tell em honda seh lehlo witout telling them keh its the same oil but repackaged theyll b like haan haan woh bhoohat zabardast oil hai hehehe...

what's the long discussion going on here on Shell motor oils?. i have used shell semi synthetic till 2003,, and i had no problems with that.,, just change it in time, that's it.
