I have been driving cars and riding bikes since last 8 years. During these 8 years, I have always preferred to add Hi Octane (a liquid hydrocarbon found in petroleum that exists in 18 structurally different forms) in my vehicles, although I do drove cars which are running on regular gasoline, but Hi Octane is HIGH OCTANE. It gives power, acceleration and the extra torque your vehicle deserves and yes, it also gives you the driving pleasure you want with added mileage and added engine life. People think that the Hi Octane is expensive, but the benefits on Hi Octane will make you to think again before using regular gasoline in your cars or bikes as it does not cost you extra cash comparing to the benefits.

Your comments, experiences and information are welcome.

Offcourse Hi Octane is a better fuel but only If your engine can tell the difference between Hi Octane and Regular Octane Fuel..

That is that carburated cars cannot usually tell the difference between different grades of fuel. But EFi vehicles can and they optimise ignition and fuel maps according to the grade of the fuel used. Only then it shows a larger difference in Fuel Average and Power.

Cheerz!

For your age you posess good knowledge, but if you can ride a bike as they are not EFIs then you will agree with me that EFIs or No EFIs, Bikes or Cars, Hi Octane WORKS!

All "Normal" cars run fine on 87 Octane. I once read in a US newspaper that running on higher octane than the one recommended for the engine would cause the extra stuff to not get burnt properly and hence result in carbon deposits on cylinder heads.

Having said that, the regular gasoline in Pakistan is far from 87 Octane. Its supposed to be 87, but Pakistani sell adulterated gasoline here by mixing kerosine oil etc. in it to earn extra profit.

So our "Hi Octane" is really 87 octane (I think) at most! I would not be surprised AT ALL if Pakistanis sell the SAME grade gasoline at the stations with two different prices calling it Hi-Octane! If they can adulterate the regular gasoline, they might as well be adulterating the Hi-Octane as well.

In the US, I filled my 2001 RAV with 87, 89, and 91 Octane. In all cases, I got the SAME mileage and SAME performance. Why? Because when they sell you 87, it is really 87. The engine did not need any more than 86. So runnning it on 91 did not make much of a difference.

But Pakistan is different.

@ Salmankhilji,

your comments are quite detailed, but can you tell me, why regular gasoline is almost Transparent and hi octane's color is somewhat Red? is it because of that grading you mentioned or can it be because of mixing Kerosine Oil. And how will you compare the fuel you used in US and the fule you are using in pakistan.

Hi Octane Is Used by Most peoples in Racing.
After all it must wud be having some advantage thats why peoples are using it!
Abt Adulteration .. It must wud be their

@RJQasim

First of all, the mixing you mentioned [90% Super + 10% Hi Octane per filling] can run fine on almost any gasoline engine, but in case of pure Hi-Octane, the fuel management system of the vehicle must be able to digest these higher octanes, otherwise, you will be increasing the emissions and unburnt fuel octaves [even you can feel a strong smell from the exhaust]. On the other hand, with proper fuel management system [as in racing engines or compatibles], you can get maximum benefits out of Hi-Octane.

Assalamualaikum
I m using hi oct in my car too & I did notice diffrence of pick up bcause my uncle has same model

Ok..some of you guys really need to do some research before making statements that are totally unfounded and untrue.

Here is my contribution....

  1. If your car's engine is not designed and tuned to operate on hi-octane gas, putting hi-octane gas will yield absolutely NOTHING in terms of performance over the regular gas.

It won’t make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage or run cleaner. This is proven research and if you have some technical knowhow...it makes common sense. Hi octane gas does not have nitrous in it for your engine to produce more torque...thats so crap...lol

  1. The only time you need to put a higher octane into your car (when it is not recommended for your car) is when your engine knocks. afterall...octane ratings are basically an engine's ability to resist knock. This only happens to very small % of vehicles though.

  2. Hi octane is only cleaner than other regular gas if it is mixed correctly by the gas company. Dont know about Pakistan but over here in North America...all gas companies like Shell and others are required to treat the gasoline in a way that the emissions and carbon deposits are the same.

Lastly...Hi Octane is alright for high compression motors like pro drag cars or cars meant for racing etc. that fuel is basically race fuel which is different from the gas u buy at the pump.

So plz...dont throw statements that are untrue and mis guide people that are here to learn and get some information.

Unless your car goes on the dyno to prove the difference...that feeling of yours that it performs faster is totally unsubstantiated.

GOOGLE "High Octane Benefits" and you'll know

Actually, the theory goes like this.

The ECU of the engine (mostly) keeps advancing the ignition until it detects a slight knock via a Knock Detector. This knock detector listens for a disrupted sound image via a special sensor inside the engine.

The Higher the Octane Rating, the higher the ECU can advance the ignition . The more the ignition advance along with appropriate air/fuel map will generate more power and smoothly.

Plus, as someone mentioned inferior fuel in Pakistan, yes it is true. The Pakistani government, on its website says it sells 87RON Unleaded. But Actually it is a lower octane fuel and that too Heavily Leaded. Our cars are designed to run on Unleaded Fuel Only.. This sometimes also results in clogged Catalytic Convertors.

About the colour, that might be cuz of the different mix ratio of Gasoline and Kerosene oils in High Octane.

Take @Levins 4AGE Powered AE101 Corolla For Example.....

The 4AGE engine has very high compression and has a Knock Sensor. Its cousins, the 4AGZE which is a turbo model also has a knock sensor.

When @Levin runs it on Lower Octane ratings than 100RON, the engine pings and the knock detector retards the timing to keep pace with the grade of fuel used.

So because of this, the total power output is reduced.

But @Szuberi is right, a stock car which works OK on 87RON wont need any higher an octane rating. But all those cars which have high compression engines and spark retardation system will benefit from Hi Octane.

I Pity @Levins 4AGE.....Thirsty for 100RON not available to the public.............LOL!

I cry when that happens...lol

some ppl here say that they put four tip plugs and put high octane gas in their car and their car goes much faster now...ahhahahahha....WTF

@ Szuberi
lol!!!

Actually 100RON is available in Pakistan but only after using sources. It comes here for cars beloning to diplomats in Islamabad. Available from Different Places. It is also available (for PIA use only) @ the Islamabad Airport as certain type of machinery @ the airport requires high octane fuel.

@kiani1

100RON?? I read on the internet that the number you see on US petrol pumps is 4 less than the RON rating. So 100RON means approximately 96 Octane.

Now show me ANY gas station in the ENTIRE north america selling 96 Octane! The highest you can buy in the US is 93 Octane (97 RON).

So if something is not available in the US, it CANNOT be made available in Pakistan---regardless of what PIA tells you.

I'd need a Octanometer to measure that the real RON rating of the petrol they sell you is.

My personal observation is tht tht Hi-Octane available in Pakistan do make a difference. Incase of ma bimmer it gives me extra mileage, better acceleration and engine revs quite smoothly. In ma dad's LC aswell ther's a difference felt while its on High-Octane interms of acceleration and mileage. I used to drive my Mehran on High-Octane occassionally and ther's a difference in the acceleration, I ain't calculated the mileage though but I guess tht it turned out to be low in comparision to regular fuel. Whereas in ma grandfather's car, it used to take jerks usually while on regular fuel but performs okii on high-octane.

Apart frm that, at most of the petrol pumps in city nd with low circulation they sell adulaterated petrol nd diesel. Pumps with gudd sales usually dont sell adulterated diesel and petrol. Coz the margin is excellent if ya got gudd circulation.

I prefer High-Octane.

Thnxx..

@ Salmankhilji

Man, u are right abt the US ratings. But there are special machines which require this rating of fuel and PIA imports it for its own use.

And it isnt available on any pump. Just in JERRYCANS with PIA and Airport Authorities. Have you ever seen the Generator Pump Car which fuels up the Airplane???? That has a very high compression engine and that too is carburated. So, if u feed it lower octane fuel, it will ping to death.

the higher the number of octane .. .the more resistant it is to burn ....

hi octane .. which is used here has a comparatively less temperature to burn ... thus increasing the cumbustion power and efficency giving better power and torque

the more the engine runs .. the more the wear and tear

btw .. the machines at PIA are used to meassure JP ( jet petrolium) which is way different then petrol or octane
