I encountered the same problem last week as my car was parked inside with top cover since past 4 months and we hardly drove it.
Anyways last week I opened up the hood and to my surprise there was rat shit everywhere in the engine bay. After looking further deep inside I saw a huge fat rat which just went further in and I lost my sight on it.
That day I ran the vehicle for almost 1.5 hours within the city thinking that as the engine bay gets hot, rat might run away. Anyways also bought a rat killer medicine and when I came back home, I spread the medicine in the engine bay and left it for 24 hours. Next day in the evening I cleaned the whole engine bay with pressure washer and chemical guys soap and properly detailed it as it was stinking alot. After detailing it, once again I spread the rat killer medicine and now it's been almost a week and I haven't seen either the rat or it's poop in the bay

Use.peppermint spray in engine bay and keep rats away..i use that.its non toxic and safe for children..the downside is it looses smell after a week

Easily available on daraz

I had similar problem but with kittens ... two cats roaming around had 8 kittens and all of them used to just enter the engine bay .. i had to struggle alot to keep them away ... first two times we just scared them but it did not help ... so eventually i got a corrugated sheet roll and wrapped my car with it  .... the kittens were really small and i was afraid any day they can get in some belt wen i start the car ..... after couple of weeks the kittens were back again and this time they were a bit grown up .. they easily got inside the car jumping through tyres gap .. so this time i got a bigger corrugated roll and wrapped it 2/3 times around the car .. the gap between the tyres was also covered so eventually after 2-3 days they left ... that was just sharing my experience

definitely that cannot be done for rats as they would eat the paper .... i was recently looking at aliexpress if there is some device ( as i needed for my fruit tree as well to keep birds away ) ... so i found a device which generates some ultrasound waves ..( solar device or battery operated whichever suits u ) ..... there were positive reviews about it with one person saying he installed it in his backyard and his neighbor's dog no more come around his area now ... although i have not ordered it yet .. but something worth trying i believe ... maybe u can try that

Well, it is a real big problem, especially nowadays the newer cars come with everything relying on electronics. The proper and long term solution is to get yourself an electronic ultrasonic rodent repellent. And do get a dual frequency one. You can either hook it up to a 9V battery or to the car's battery and leave it under the hood, it consumes very minuscule amount of energy so it won't hurt the car's battery. And it's a definite guarantee that it will take care of your rat problem.
