Dear Xperts

I am interested in Prado 96-02, in early years they have 1 kz engine and later 1 kd, some people recomended me 1 kz and say 1 kd is complete failure, so i m confused now as i m more interested in 2001-02 bec it would be newer compared to 1996. Pl suggest with ur opinions.

Regards

Asad

The issue is dirty diesel that creates problems for the newer engines ... so ill suggest you to stick with 1KZ ... ive heard they install special sensors n software for dirty n sub standard diesel to perform normally... in bmw,s benz , and new toyotas ,,,

Well and per my understanding both perform the same .. Underlined are some Basic Differences

1KZ = 8 valve- SHOC_ wastegated turbo
1KD = 16 valve-DOHC- VGT turbo

underlined are the difference between the turbos ...

Wastegated turbo
A wastegate is a valve that diverts exhaust gases away from the turbine wheel in a turbocharged engine system. Diversion of exhaust gases regulates the turbine speed, which in turn regulates the rotating speed of the compressor. The primary function of the wastegate is to regulate the maximum boost pressure in turbocharger systems, to protect the engine and the turbocharger. One advantage of installing a remote mount wastegate to a free-float (or non-WG) turbo includes allowance for a smaller A/R turbine housing, resulting in less lag time before the turbo begins to spool and create boost.[1] (source WIKIpedia)

VGT Turbo

Variable geometry turbochargers (VGTs) are a family of turbochargers, usually designed to allow the effective aspect ratio (sometimes called A/R Ratio) of the turbo to be altered as conditions change. This is done because optimum aspect ratio at low engine speeds is very different from that at high engine speeds. If the aspect ratio is too large, the turbo will fail to create boost at low speeds; if the aspect ratio is too small, the turbo will choke the engine at high speeds, leading to high exhaust manifold pressures, high pumping losses, and ultimately lower power output. By altering the geometry of the turbine housing as the engine accelerates, the turbo's aspect ratio can be maintained at its optimum. Because of this, VGTs have a minimal amount of lag, have a low boost threshold, and are very efficient at higher engine speeds. (source ; Google )

I own a 2002 1KD powered Prado and i simply love the engine and its performance ... but one has to keep in mind no engine is bullet Proof .. if you maintain it properly it gives you no Problem :slight_smile:

I have had good experience with both the engines you mentioned. Personally I hate both of these engines. 1kz is fuel thirsty, prone to head failure and slow engine. The positive side of 1kz is its cheaper to maintain. 1kd on the other hand has better power and economy but parts are relatively expensive and the injector issues makes one crazy.

My suggestion is buy a car with 1kz. Throw the 1kz and fit 5vzfe if possible for you.

Bro,go for a 1kz-TE i.e without intercooler.im using a fj 90 n its awesome. problem comes when u dont do regular maintainance n timely oil changes.

Lol! May be there will be one. Could be cool though!

why without intercooler ???

go for 1KZ engine.

Dear Friends!

I am planning to buy surf diesel or petrol, your kind suggestions are needed as fol:-

  1. Surf Model 1999 - 2000 or 2003 (new shape) only islamabad no. suggest their prices as well.

  2. Should it be diesel or petrol?

  3. Fuel economy diesel (1kz / 1 kd) vs petrol.

  4. Maintenance cost for engine, suspension & body noise etc.

  5. Which has more resale value (diesel or petrol).

  6. Major issue with engines. As this won't be used frequently only 1 or 2 trips a months (long & short).

1 year later
  1. Surf Model 1999-2000 price ideally between 17-19 lacs. 2003 and up models start from 25 lacs
  2. Diesel
  3. Fuel economy of diesel is better. Diesel engines are by rule 40% fuel efficient compared to petrol engine of same strength. 3 ltr Diesel engine is roughly 8-10 km per liters.
  4. Maintenance cost engine body noise etc for diesel would be slightly more than petrol
  5. Diesel has more resale
  6. If you look after your car there won't be major issues
