Poor fuel economy of Honda Civic 2007 (aka Reborn)

I have a 2007 model Honda Civic 1.8L Prosmatec.
Since the very start it is giving around 6 kmpl in urban drive. I have got it checked thoroughly from Honda dealership, but no gain. Some people in my circle have 2010-11 Civic PT model and they claim an average of 9-10 kmpl. The car recently got throttle body service, engine tuning and spark plugs were changed. Tyres are fine and there is not wheel balance or wheel alignment issue. I regularly clean the air filter as well.
My guess is that the early models of 8th gen PT are giving poor mileage, how do I fix this issue?

check the catalytic converter. if it is choked then it will not give u a good mileage

Use shell HX7 5W/30 engine oil. Before engine oil change, flush the engine. For engine flush use one liter diesel, half liter kerosene oil and one liter cheap oil. Drain old oil and then add above mixture. Start car at idle speed for 10 minutes. Drain mixture and use shell engine oil. Do this at least twice a year. Change transmission oil with original honda ATF recommended oil. Remove and clean fuel injectors or use Gumout fuel system cleaner regularly after every 3000 km before oil change. Keep all tires pressure up to 32 psi. Check brakes by rotating each tires by hand with car jack up. If found poor free rotation of any tire then repair the brakes. Remove any unnecessary weight from the car. Check shock absorbers and if found weak then change them as poor shocks produce drag. Better use standard size tires 195/65/15.

Although diesel is used to flush engines because it has solvent and lubricating properties, it is NOT recommended.
Diesel leaves stains and does not evaporates so it will never drain completely out of the engine.
Better use a good quality engine flush which are easier and safe to use.

Did u replace transmission fluid?

Front suspension already serviced, all four shocks checked, all four pads replaced last month. Using standard size (195/65/R15) Yoko advan.

Transmission fluid was recently changed with genuine ATF from Honda, it has done 6000 kms so far after that.

on someones suggestion, I got it checked last year too, it was all fine. The car was clocked at 84k kms back then. Its clocked at 98k kms now, I ll get it checked in morning too.

Totally depends on your daily route, mine is a 2011 model and in summer it stays 7-7.5 km per liter. I usually drive in DHA where average speed remains 30-40km/h and you have to stop every few hundred meters to either turn or give way etc.

So don't worry about the 1-2 km/h difference, not worth stressing about. Most people exaggerate their fuel efficiency.

Bro I am a very calm driver, driving this one to max 3500 rpms. Thats economical zone for any motor.

Get the exhaust and intake tappets checked and adjusted from good workshop. If possible go to Abid car tuning center Faisal Town Lahore contact number is 03008109402. They charge only Rs 500 for complete engine tuning of honda car and very expert and honest people. However, do carry out engine flush and use complete fuel system cleaner as sometime there are carbon deposits and varnish layer build up inside engine parts which rob the fuel efficiency. As your car is a high mileage car so engine flushing and fuel system cleaning is very important. If possible try to decarbonize your car engine by pouring very slowly 50/50 mixture of diesel and kerosine (total volume of mixture 500 ml) through vacuum pipe with engine speed maintaining at around 3000 rpm. Use vacuum pipe which is contacted with brake booster. As you use this mixture a large white smoke will come out from exhaust pipe. Do not worry, it is normal. After finishing the mixture all the carbon deposits from piston tops and valves shall be removed and you will feel how smooth your car has become afterwards.

Take out spark plugs and check the color of electrodes. If the color is rusty brown then it is normal and means that air-fuel ratio and engine timing and piston compression is ok. If color is black then air-fuel ratio is not good. If spark plugs are oily and black in color then pistons are weak. If color is almost white then again air-fuel ratio is not good. Switch off the car on long signals if you want to improve the mileage.

The main problem with this car is if you drive slow or take it through a stop and go route. It returns a very poor average.

Mine returns 10kmpl with AC in Lahore and I have done nothing special with my car. Its just that my route involves only one signal and a few speed humps.

I am using this engine flush formula since last one year on every oil change and there are no ill effects observed to-date. I even use 2 liter diesel to flush my Suzuki mehran on every oil change. Very safe formula. However, if you are still skeptical then use only kerosene oil 500 ml and add this to old engine oil and run the car engine on idle speed for 10 minutes and then drain oil. Replace filter and add new oil preferably synthetic like Shell HX7 5W/30. My suzuki mehran 2010 with 1 lakh mileage started showing very poor fuel economy. So I removed its tappet cover and clean all parts with kerosene. Lot of varnish and carbon removed. After this action my car mileage increased from 11 km to 17 km. I also used 50/50 ration diesel and kerosene oil mixture through vacuum pipe near intake manifold and it de-carbonized the pistons tops and afterwards my car become very smooth and there was no more auto ignition problem during switching off the car.
