How you plan your days and stays is up to you but here are a few things you MUST strictly follow in order to avoid any inconvenience.
1- Plan all your travels during the day light. DO NOT drive during night time in hilly areas. Make a habit of waking up 4:30 am in the morning and you must be on the road by 5:30 to utilize the maximum day light. Roads are tricky and often there is landslide in case your path is blocked by the landslide you should he enough daylight left to return to some town you passed by and find a place to stay. Some times patches of roads are just gone with the landslide and to drive on such patches you need maximum light. DO NOT TAKE ANY RISK and make sure you are in your hotel room by Maghrib prayer. After maghrib prayer stay within city limits.
2- If it starts to rain or you have a forecast of heavy rain then do not travel. there are big landslides during rain.
3- When you leave for your next destination do it early in the morning and always always always ask the drivers of the vehicles coming from the opposite direction, about the road condition and weather condition of the city you are traveling to.
4- Roads for the most part are excellent but there are parts of road that are damaged by rain water. to drive over it you need to have a car with softer suspension and enough road clearance. Car should also have a lot of space as you will be sitting there for long periods of time.
Swift in my opinion has a hard suspension( will make the trip very tiring), has less road clearance (you might get stuck or will damage the underside of car because of the rough parches of roads) and also a very compact car (children will get tired soon). So if possible get a bigger car such as corolla.
5- Make sure to get brand new break pads installed in the car before your trip and keep getting your car checked every 400-500 kms or at least get the break pads services.
In july 2016 I traveled from Lahore to Naran, Gilgit, Hunza and Khunjrab Pass and strictly followed the above mentioned advice and not once were we inconvenienced by any thing while we kept hearing about the cases of people being stuck on the road for 8-10 hours because of landslide. We even heard about two cases where cars plunged into the indus river because a part of the road was missing and driver could not see it at night.
You have young children so please be careful.

Thanks for ur input. Safety is my first priority. your adivces are realistic. I will never drive in night time and surely follow your advices strictly. As for my car right now I have no option except swift. Now I am thinking I should keep my car at Naran and arrange other transport to adjacent areas.
