Opinion on Honda Civic 2002-2005

Hello everyone,

I am planning to buy a Honda Civic 2002-2005 for my father who usually drives the Honda City's (2012 and 2013) which we currently have. He is really happy with the drive and fuel consumption of Honda City.
That said, due to our requirements, we need another car for my dad and I am really looking at Honda Civic between '01 to '05 with the current budget which I have.

For this I need your opinion on whether to go for this purchase given that:
1- Since fuel economy of City is approximately 15-17 Km/L. What is the standard 'USUAL' fuel economy for civic '01 to '05? My father is rather stingy on economy.
2- Issues with Civic '01-'05 after it has done more than 100,000 KM mileage? What should I look for when buying the available cars in the market? Are there any major issues with engine, suspension, ride etc?
3- Is it worth it to go for a Civic 01-05 rather than buying a City '09-2010?

1. Civic will give you 11 kmpl +- with casual driving style

2. There are no default issues with the car except for power steering. Pump starts making weird noises nothing serious tbh . Apart from that make sure u get the belts and fluids checked by professionals and replace things accordingly to avoid forth coming convenience.

3. This particular civic is a better car in each and every aspect wrt to 2010 city. Only go for it if u are willing to buy one in immaculate condition else city is way to go.

Just make sure you dont end up buying a lemon.

The fuel economy is not really the best part about this car, so if youre looking at this aspect specifically it wont make you happy.

I drive a manual exi, it returns 12-13kmpl with a very light foot and with my commute involving 50% of signal free drive.
Prosmatecs return even lesser mileage.

The only issues which you can anticipate in a 100000+ car will be the suspension issues. The power pump leaks but not in every case but thats not a biggie.

I personally would prefer a newer car over a 10 year old car. But since you have budget restraints go for it. But do bear in mind, Old is old.

My manual 2005 Exi is giving me around 13 km/l. It doesn't usually get any better than this in city driving. There aren't any other serious pet issues of this model that I can think of. The good thing about it is that parts are easily available and are not very expensive.

Thank you for the info. I guess that the suspension and power pump are the most important things to check then. I've found one '02 model EXI civic which is in pristine condition with less than 100K mileage under it's hood.
I too would prefer a new car over a 10 year old one but constraints do come up sometimes

Thanks a lot! That's great to hear. I normally go to Honda Service Center's and I've heard that parts for Civic's older than 08' are not available with them anymore. I guess that if anything comes up then local spare part shops are the way to go. Is that what you also do?

Exactly! Local spare parts in Sultan Khoo or Saddar in Rawalpindi are a good source.

Go for it if you have found one in pristine condition.
What you can do after you have purchased the car is go to Honda 3S for a full inspection. Costs around 4 thousand for a list of parts needed to be changed/replaced.

You can always buy parts off the local market and get the work done from your reliable mechanic.

I would not suggest you to use kabli parts. There are plenty of them available and are cheap as well but do not last long (personal experience).

Get Genuine or atleast OEM parts, will cost more but will serve you well.

civic blue color 2004/5 total genuine except right fender front which is showered, exi but engine is vtec.

It's a wonderful car. I have kept 3 models of this car in prosmatec transmission and it's a pleasure drive. The only problem with this car is its soft suspension and power steering pump leakage. The power steering pump issue can be resolved if you can replace the pump with electronic power steering from the same Japanese model.
If you can find the car in pristine condition and throughout driven on petrol then go for it
