I do my own work, but I have for the last 15 yrs.
If you have never done it, I would recommend not doing so based on experience. If you don't know what you're doing, and don't have the tools or someone with knowledge around, it's easy to mess something up and get stuck.
You need a good jack, jack stands, tools etc.
If you do not like the idea of mediocre techs, take your own oil and filter and watch them do it. Guide them/tell them what to do.
I have experience of them overtightening the drain plugs and oil filter here. One stripped the oil filter housing threads on our vezel. Luckily the shop took care of it, but after that I told my father I will be handling all repairs from now on.
