After reading many threads about the car sale and purchase scams meter being reversed, accidental cars being sold fake papers and all I thought I should share my experience of selling my car the very first time.
So I booked a new City from Honda Sharah e Faisal back in January 2018 and my car arrived in April of 2018. It was a black Honda City manual 1.3 and this was my first car purchased through my own savings. Now, I kept the car for around 8 months and decided to sell the car in December of 2018. After I had purchased the car I did some modification such as changed all tires to Advan DB, changed the seat interiors, added new rims and had added some extra goodies which Honda offers as extra in there.
Now here comes the most interesting part of this story which was normal for me at first but during the course of selling this car I realized that this is just not normal for the people around. When I decided to sell the car after 8 months the Odometer for the car showed 827 Km in total the car being used. Yes, the car was only driven 800 km and had been sitting idle in my parking during the 8 months because I just did not have the time and the inclination to ride the new car because of my work schedule and mostly I would use my Suzuki 150 for chores around the city because of the ugly traffic situation.
So, I posted the ad on Pakwheels and Olx primarily and thoughts I would have many inquiries in couple of days. So at first I received a couple of messages with ridiculous offers then I received a few calls but after discussing price none of them responded back. So 2 weeks after the ad had been posted I did not have a single potential buyer visit me and I was pretty disappointed. Just so you know my asking price was the same price that I paid for the new car then and I thought people would buy this at that price because its less than the own they ask for new car and also minus the waiting period and the extra stuff installed.
So when there were no inquiries for 3-4 weeks I took down the ad. After a month of the original posting I posted the ad again and this time reduced the price around Rs:25,000 and also added some new pictures of the car. So I started receiving calls and to my surprise most of the people that I spoke to were questioning me like I was some kind of scammer trying to scam them, or if there was something wrong with the car, they questioned me why I am selling, what happened to the car, did I reverse the meter, and most of them said it definitely was an accidental car. Many of the people who called were clearly saying that I must have done something with the car or there must be some hidden fault that is why I was selling the car just within a year, with such odo reading and condition.
Now in the next week I had 4 people visit me to see the car in person and all of them were adamant there must be something wrong with the car and were requesting me to disclose what the real issue is to which I was speechless and said the car is in-front of you if you find any issues just don`t buy. I also had a retired Colonel from Cantt area visit me for the car he saw the car and then stated telling me about ahadees and honesty and all that and said he would buy the car and pay lakh rupees less than my asking price because he suspects there could be something wrong with it which would show up after he uses the car is his daily use but I politely declined his offer.
All this was disappointing and funny to me at the same time that such is the condition that even if you try to sell something without fault or issues people would just not believe you and still suspect of being a cheat. Finally, after all this I had a person visit me to see the car and with him he had brought a cousin of his whose family own a showroom at Khalid bin Waleed road and you can say he was sort of an expert in selling and buying used cars. The guy came in my parking took a 360 survey of the car did the usual tik tok on the body, and opened the car and just put his head inside the car for like 10 seconds and told his cousin to buy the car. They gave me a bayana and came the next day with a payorder and took the car.
The next day while I was preparing the files and everything to handover the buyer I remember by cousin who was there told me to take out the trunk tray (purchased separately for Rs: 5000), the extra matts set (purchased from Honda extras), a unused perfume bottle and around 2500 worth of petrol in the car and shift it to the other car but my father who was standing there said do not take a single thing out from the car you have made a deal and everything inside the car is now of the buyers. I said to Abba the guy bought the car he didn’t saw the trunk, petrol or the matts and these don’t even come with the brand new car but he told me the buyer made a commitment with you for this car and everything inside the car is now his to take and I listened to my father’s advice.
So at the end I guess the people who were suspecting me of foul play were not wrong after all because we live in a time and era where we take advantage of situation anyway we could and see our actions as justified in our own mind but our elders from a different era don’t see the things the same way we do maybe because the time they grew up there wasn’t ever a need to deceive and cheat others to make a honest living. So I learned something through this experience and thought I should share this with the community.
