Mercedes Benz W123 - Worth Buying?

I live in Karachi and the other day I had the chance of buying a Mercedes Benz W123 230D I think Left Hand Automatic Drive

Its file is missing, Lahore registered but the owner said he would get it registered for me in my name. I am not concerned with that as the car is at a reputable showroom and we know the people. However, my dad is against it and feels its burning ones money due to the lack of a complete file.

My question is this - is it worth buying?

Its had 3 engine changes to date but still runs on a Benz engine

Some rust here and there and not in the most amazing condition but still a looker for sure!

I took a test drive and couldn't really fault the drive much apart from a weak AC which I guess needs gas charging or something

Interior parts have obviously been replaced with Japenese jugaary pieces here and there. The dials don't work apart from the speed. Kinda dodgy as how would I know if the car is over-heating.

The thing is that, I am getting it for Rs 300,000 and only plan on using it for short 15kms daily driving

Can any owners/experts shed more led if its worth it at the above price mark given

Is maintaining such a thing very expensive?

walk away - W123 a TAXI model in IRAN & Afghanistan. Hardly any W123 in Pakistan is with actual documentation let alone on stock power train which had 5 cylinder & 4 cylinder diesel motors

pay attention to him and walk away, keep tab & see for how long that w123 remain available at THAT REPUTABLE SHOW ROOM ..

I think that In Lahore W123 well maintained is around Rs.700K to Rs.850K. depending on condition with all the documents. If someone is offering half of the current market value then definitely there is something fishy.

w123 has the most simplest wiring of all. - how come its bad.

the oil pressure gauge in the meter is actually a mechanical gauge with a hard line connection on it. the temp gauge is standard issue too like any other car. The entire cluster works from the alternator charging circuit wire - so how come its dead??

A/C weak - mercedes w123 had the harrison r4 compressor which I can guarantee that no mechanic in Pakistan knows how to repair anymore, and it has a very unique charging system too, if its let to run dry even while charging, the compressor dies.

file bad on car, means leave it, I can also guarantee you that its rubber parts are also perished and they are not sold in Pakistan anywhere now.

best leave the car and move on.

a big NO for buying any car with out the file.. also the numbr is registered in lhr.. so the resale of ths wud be a nightmare for u ..

People in the western world usually shy away from buying an old, high mileage Mercedes, BMW, Audi or Porsche, and there's a good reason behind it.

Old Euro Cars are a nightmare to maintain and run and spares are either prohibitively expensive, very scarce or both.

And that fact reflects in their KBB values.

A 2007 BMW 5-Series will cost you just as much as a 2007 Toyota Camry in The U.S despite the fact that The Beemer was almost 50% expensive than The Camry when it was brand new back in 2007!

So... Unless you know how to wrench this old thing; don't bother.
