I am wondering if someone could help me here. What is the best 5 speed transmission one can buy in the local market to replace stock 4 speed transmission in 1982 FJ40 petrol engine. Some one has suggested me Toyota H55F 5 speed (came in 1985 LandCruiser FJ60 and LandCruiser II with 13-BT). I am looking for feedback and shortest route possible with direct bolt-in into 2F.

i dont think u need to replace 4 speed fwd gear box . cheapest way is to get a coaster gearbox and attache ur existing 4x4 auxilary to it

Thank you Spectra and Funduro.
Spectra, I guess the problem is there is no consensus whether H55F is direct bolt-on or it requires modification to drive shaft. Different people have different opinion to this. Modification part is bad and I would love to avoid (or at least trying to) mechanic quackery. The other problem in Lahore is, while it is possible to have Benz fixed, it is almost impossible to find reliable FJ40 mechanic. I have talked to few and they were not familiar with what H55F gearbox is to begin with, let alone capable of such change.

you should bring ur jeep to Pindi.. there are good mechanics at city saddar road... they know the job.. they work on all kinda jeeps willys to toyota!

i think it should be bolt on.. even if it is not.. an adaptor plate can be made to do that.. and it works fine.. like on my jeep a 3CT is mated with a rocky's gearbox using an adaptor plate.. its done properly with no issues.

If you need to increase the top speed change diffs not gearbox . most 5 speed gearboxes are for low powered diesels . I have similar 2f in my fj . it goes up to 120 km

i got mine fitted with cng .

funduro thanks. I find it quite interesting that differentials alone can make this big difference. So what do you do when the jeep "ask" for 4th and 5th Gear?

Is it possible if you can post the pictures of your FJ with this setup? That will be good guidance for all of us.

regards,

i am attaching pictures .
2f is quite high torque engine .
i feel you bought the car from army auction these jeeps r rkc milspecs jeeps . with low ratio diff s . all you need is to replace these with high ratio ones
but i dont recomend driving ur jeep above 100km . what upgrades have u done .
but if u still feel you can get a 5 fwd gearbox it should be arround 35000 to 60000 depending on condition
Omar

Omar thanks.
Yes it is Army auctioned. As far upgrades are concerned, new Carb, new tune up kit (plug, wires, condensors etc etc) Pro Comp Shocks and practically whatever came along we changed.
What has not been changed is Clutch and Gearbox at this point. Email me your number at isiddique@sigmatechllc.com or isiddique@comcast.net will give you a call.

Any information about the conversion of soft top Fj40 into hard top, how much cost will be incurred for the conversion, is roller bar essential for the safety of passengers on board in hard top , that to of which cage, regards

Going 5 speed from 4 speed is not recommended. For that i have the following to say.

  1. H 55 F have both the versions for diesels and petrol vehicles. Gears are the same, the only difference is that of the housing and the smaller shaft which comes out of the gear and fixes in the clutch plate, sorry forgetting it's name. Out of 10 H 55 F gears in pak, you'll find 9 of diesels and to make it fit into a petrol engine, you'll have to cut and weld that shaft which is not at all recommended.

  2. A 40 is not for more than 100km even of highways. And if at all you need the rpm to be calm even on more than 100 or 110, increase the existing tire size. By the way, what tire size r u running currently. With this the rpm will decrease and it's just like changing diffs and you'll end up having more road clearance also.

  3. And than, the original 82 FJ 40 was with the stock 3 speed petrol gear. The 4 speed only came in 83 and 84 models. So to me a 5 speed will keep you busy in changing just gears from 0 even till 100km/ ltr. The petrol H 55 F only came in an FJ 62 along with the 4 speed gear and never in a petrol 40.

  4. And lastly what a 4X4 has to do with the 5th gear??????? Again i would say, just change the tires and get the same result.

If you need any further assistance, you can contact me on 0333 5119925. I have used all 2b, 3B, new 3B, 2H, 12HT, 13BT, 2F and the 3F with both 4 speed and 5 speed gears.

These hard top kits can be found for 80k from pindi.

Siddique Sb, I am using H55F on my FJ40 and it works great. You don't have to be at or above 100 kmh to use the fifth gear. I engage 5th at 80 kmh and it becomes calmer, smoother and have enough power to incline usual ups on a highway in Potohar belt etc. No adapter plates are required for fixing. But yes, minor mods are required in drive shafts.
Furthermore, I have not driven a H41 transmission on a highway with 2F engine but I have read on different forums that fuel consumption is slightly better with gift gear.

doesnt matter, great posts will help other users
