They 'can'. It is also possible it has been replaced if in excellent condition.
The belt is made to last the manufacturer recommended interval. However, there are situations where the belt service life may exceed this. But, does anyone know EXACTLY when a mechanical component will break or fail? Nope. We can only guestimate based on service history and visual inspection.
If this engine is an interference engine, the belt breaking will cause your engine to fail.
So, if the belt is in good condition for now, have it inspected again in the future to ensure there are no dry rot/cracks which will cause it to break. Or, see if anyone has any record of it being replaced. You can then use this record to plan the next belt replacement.
If it has never been replaced, replacing it in the near future may be in your best interest to ensure longevity and peace of mind.
