Have AirBags got any relation with SeatBelts?

i have heard that AirBags wont open if not wearing the SeatBelts ?? some say thats right and some say thats totally wrong conception ??

An airbag is a Supplementary Restraint System. It will deploy when the primary system i.e. the seatbelt is being used.

Also it depends on the car, most modern cars have sensors under seats which tells the weight on the seat so the airbag deploys accordingly. Not sure if it's mandatory in old cars for airbags to deploy only when seat belts are being used.

Airbag deployment without seat belt on, could be fatal, as passengers and driver's bodies move forward with the impact and if they strike with the rapid inflating air bag then the impact could be fatal or at least inflict severe injuries. That is why it is linked to the seat belt, because seat belt prevents the body from plunging toward the front.

ahhh I should've made it clear. The second part of my post is regarding the front passenger airbag. Yes the driving side airbag will deploy ONLY when wearing seatbelt. Hope it clears.

Indeed. The force with which the airbags deploy is enough to kill a person, therefore it is mandatory for you to wear your seatbelt

rooniboy, Also remember that this is the reason why children should not be seated in the front passenger seat. The headrests also help to protect you from breaking your neck, hence remember to adjust your headrest.

Not really as you need to be on certain speed when airbag deploys. Also fwiw, surveys proved that almost 30% of the time airbag doesn't deploy, even when you're wearing seatbelt.

I would differ with that. My cousin had an accident while driving his Corolla Gli. He was not wearing a seat belt, but the air bag still deployed.

local cars are a grey area, some deploy airbags with belts on, some deploy airbags with belts off,.. some have airbags and don't deploy,.. most don't have airbags.

airbags that go off without seatbelts can be fatal as they deply faster since they have to "catch" the occupants. airbags which are SRS deploy slower since the seatbelt is already slowing the occupant down.

anyone who drives without a seatbelt is a muppet,.. i've been saying it for all my life. who cares if your friends laugh,... at least you'll be around in a few years....
