I used to get regular work on upwork. Then I got a full time job.

Elance is difficult to get started but it snowballs pretty quickly, I heard.

Pakistanis are also getting good luck on fiverr.

So I would strongly recommend upwork and fiverr

For upwork you'll have to be very patient, consistent and meticulous. You're going to compete with the world. So your worth needs to be at par. Don't make half hearted efforts on
- building your profile
- applying to jobs
- clearing the tests
Otherwise you'll only end up disappointed. That too after wasting your time.

Being a freelance doesn't mean you don't have to work any time don't want to. It means you'll need to work most of the time, because that's simply how the rest of the people work. The money is definitely there. Whether you have what it takes is the only question.

Thanks for sharing this info. Can you tell what these freelancing payment method is? And also how do we get a job initially because in the beginning our profile doesn't have any previous job experience so people wont be will to give job to such a person? Thanks.

What do you mean by "these freelancing payment method"? payment goes into your upwork/elance/fiverr account which you can wire transfer into your local bank account. Upwork charges extra for every withdrawal ($30 per transaction I think). So best is you withdraw after accumulating around $1000 or something. do read their FAQs and forums and stuff.

I use to have a guy abroad so I use to transfer it into his Paypal for no extra charge. It was a hassle for the money to get to me thereafter. So then I started wire transferring into my SCB account. This was for Upwork. I never got any luck from Elance so not sure about that.

To get your first job, and that's the most difficult part, you can try:
- Do a small inexpensive job like article writing (that'll your reviews flowing). This worked for me personally
- Have a strong portfolio and very concise yet comprehensive introduction
- Have a friendly and professional looking photo. I would advise against using passport-type photos or Mehndi-function type photo
- Don't ever ever ever keep a generic paragraph of text to post as your cover letter. Write down your cover WRT to the job and the employer should strongly feel that you've read everything. You can try asking him a question in first two lines like "You said you need a poster designed. Do you mind if I take inspiration from other people's work or does the work have to be completely original?". See this, to me, shows you've read it all, you're concerned about customer satisfaction and you a bit about what a design process is. You can obviously tailor this according to your needs.
- No grammar/spelling mistakes. Re-read your text to remove any mistakes. Be meticulous. Don't take things for granted. You'll have to leave behind a lot of your Pakistani habits.
- Keep applying. Don't worry about not getting a job after 100 applications. The rate with dramatically come down once you build a positive history or work.

AND STOP LOOKING FOR ADVICE. JUST GET INTO IT!!

And stay away from FB groups. I've personally had very bad experiences. People don't seem to think twice before running off with your money. But my Accountant brother is still working for a lady after 2 years, off of the same group. So risky at best!

I am working as a freelance mobile application developer for last 3 years. Started working on odesk back in 2013, and recently odesk and elance merged in to upwork so elance doesn't exists any more.

I withdraw directly in to my local scb account and i get money with in 2 to 8 hours normally. Upwork charges 5 dollar per withdrawal. The only issue is exchange rate, you get 4 to 5 PKR less than the marker price of dollar.

Back when i started it took me nearly a month to get my first job and that was only a $10 job (a bug fix) but back then i had a full time job as well and freelancing was just a part time thing but slowly my experience grew up and i built a strong profile and work started to come regularly and i left my job and started doing freelancing full time nearly 1 and half year ago.

I am pretty satisfied with it, it's just the fierce competition these days that bothers me some time, but then earning your living is not easy.

Don't send canned proposals. Read the job description carefully, respond to it like you would respond to someone describing the job to you face to face. Don't tell them that you're a good problem. Explain to them how you would solve their problem. I post jobs on Upwork, the first thing I do is filter out all proposals that haven't read my job description. Believe me, we can tell no matter how good your canned response is. We do this all day. So always make sure to tailer your responses to the job description.

Other than that, your job score and previous experience on Upwork holds a lot of weight, so it will take you some time to get traction. Landing your first few jobs will be the hardest, things will be smoother afterwards.

For the first few jobs, yes. It's unfortunate, but the low rates the best means of gaining an advantage over the competition. That, and your cover letter. Nothing beats an impressive cover letter.
