Here is the lowdown on the engine oil (or coolant) flush.
Engine flush can be good to extend the life of an engine in certain situations.
- When engine has developed "some" sludge,
- When engine has developed some knocking etc...
Engine flush is known to cause problems in engines where engine may not have been serviced regularly. In these cases, there is a chance of oil pan flush clearing the sludge and causing some cracks or leaks in the hoses. Remember, sludge is also good to block some minor cracks and tears in the engine block and hoses. When the sludge is cleaned, these cracks and tears appear.
If the engine is old and service history is unknown and the owner wants to flush it just for "some" peace of mind, its better to put in regular engine oil and change it every 1000 kms (with regular running) for a few times. Just remember to drain the oil from the bottom of the engine (oil pan), and not from top using vacuum sucker. This will move a load of sludge without causing any existing tears or cracks to appear. By doing this every 1000 km for 4-5 times, you can bring the engine to a much better condition.
On an engine with good/known service history, most of the sludge can be cleaned, and as long as oil/filter used to be changed regularly, it will not crack or tear any hoses.
Engine flush is very unlikely to cause major "variances" between the piston cylinder head after flushing. Remember flushing can remove "some" sludge, but it can never absolutely clean the piston heads or drums. Some fine sludge can only be cleaned by opening the cylinder head and then by manual scrubbing or by using machines.
