Engine knock on cold start, how to fix?

Hi all,

There's a ticking noise on almost every first start of day, only sometimes there's none or it goes away after few seconds, but mostly it keeps on until car is almost at normal temperature, about 5 minutes or so.

Only recently, I found a video on YouTube with similar noise, and I learned, it's called lifters noise. Now on YouTube, almost all of them recommend using engine flush additives. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lifter+noise+on+startup

Has anyone experienced this lifters noise in their vehicle? and how did you fix it? And what did local mechanics call it?

suzuki swift 5W-30 or 10W-30 both are equally good
stay away from so called imported stuff , buy only from trusted pumps of fuel brand

I changed engine oil to Shell 10W-40 not far ago, and it has done only ~600KMs so far.

Before it, I used Caltex, same 10W-40, but it was the only oil which started to reduce after running for about 3,500KMs and I kept it for nearly 4,000KMs. It went to low level on dip stick when I changed it. And I guess this is when I started noticing ticking sound.

The reason I switched from ZIC was its cost, 1800Rs. for 4L when I first bought it, now it is 3,800Rs. I have used ZIC 10w-40 for almost 3 years, Aisin once and another odd brand once, then Caltex and now Shell.

I followed a video which said that it could be from advance timing of spark, I made a small change to spark timing yesterday, in morning when I started, sound was not too much like before, but it was there for almost 2 mins, then it went away.

I will keep check on it, maybe retard spark timing a bit more after few days to see if it helps. If that didn't fix it, I will definitely change engine oil back to ZIC or Aisin 10W-40.

Edit: According to Pajero Mini service manual, 5W-30 oil is not recommended for turbo charged engine. I'm going to stick with 10W-40, just gonna change brand if that'll be the case, or maybe use semi-synthetic one.

ZIC 15W-40 mineral one looks good, same viscosity as recommended in manual, and price is not too high.

If you are from cold climatic conditions and early mornings are single digit temp 5W-30 engine oil shall be adopted

I'm from Karachi, so no cold here...

engine m13A in swift takes 3.7 liter without filter change 3.9 with filter check incase your workshop has over filled the engine oil drain a bit. check engine oil before start early in the morning. mark over dipstick shall be at max level not low not high.

Pajero Mini takes almost same amount, and I keep check on oil level.

sir you use 660 engine mini suv. i saw your roof rack diy. you shall switch to 10W-30 oil 660 jdm engines are not for thick oil. if your vehicle is clean check the under hood maintenance sticker for engine oil specs .Ow-30 is the best but since u are in tropical karachi 10W-30 is equally good.

I shared excerpt from Pajero Mini service manual above, it does not recommend using low viscosity 5W-30 oils in turbo models.

Karachi's temperatures are not too cold, even in winters. I believe it needs good quality oil or maybe mineral based oil as this one is 1995 model.

Yes can use 10W-30, but there are 2 reasons,

1. When I bought the vehicle and didn't have a copy of service manual, it was recommended here by members who already experienced 10W-40 in their Pajero Mini. I am using same for almost 4 years of ownership.

2. Engine was already 100k KMs old when I bought it, and now almost 140k KMs. Thin oil is usually not recommended for such engines, so I'm trying to not push limit, and keep in middle range, not too low or not too high viscosity and Shell one is cheaper

Checked today on first start, no ticking sound... None... Nada... It looks like that spark ignition timing trick worked.

I just retarded spark ignition timing by rotating distributor 2 or 3 mm only. And there's no impact on idle speed of engine, usually it does a bit.

I'll keep it under check for few more days, then mark it as complete success.

Yes, it was engine knock, as pointed in shared video, there are many reasons for it. Ignition timing fixed it for me.

Mine have a 4A31 660cc Turbo engine but l couldn't find the distributor.

My car knoks while in top gear and accelerating. Any idea how to retard the timing?
