DIY Rear Wheel Bearing Change Honda Civic 96 - 00

got some time on the week end,

rear wheel bearing passenger side had been making noises since the rainy season in karachi.

so time to change it.

the bearing is NTN HUB008-72. just take this number to any bearing shop, rather than hunting around at parts stores.

tools needed:
Breaker Bar
32mm socket
cheater bar or very big breaker bar
screw driver / hammer / chisel
brake cleaner (very good cleaner)
some grease
jack and jack stand
angle grinder (optional)
rags for cleaning up
torque wrench

procedure
1) loosen lug nuts, jack up car put on jack stand, take off wheel.
2) release handbrake, wiggle / tap brake drum to take it off.
3) use a screw driver and hammer to pry the hub cap off
4) use 32 mm socket, breaker bar to open up the spindle nut. you can use a screw driver to hammer out the detent if possible.
5) use a bearing puller or hammer to take off the bearing and washer
6) clean thoroughly the spindle.
7) apply a thin film of grease on the spindle and other exposed parts. (not the brake pads !!)
8) fix new bearing and washer, the tightening torque is 134 lb ft
9) apply some more grease to prevent water ingress
10) hammer in the hub cap.
11) slide on the brake drum and put on your tyre.
12) all done.

cheater bar.... a 3/4" GI old pipe i had lying around.

had to grind the nut a little bit, it was refusing to budge, didnt want to break any thing

8" bearing puller and angle grinder.

optional, you can use a hammer to tap the bearing out.

thats rust mixed with grease film. cleaned instantly with the brake cleaner.

it is a real neat job @nfssaad bhai! it is quite easy DIY too if you have the right tools. i learnt the same thing a couple of weeks ago on my Lancer!

Where to buy the hub bearings?

I can find regular ball bearings in lahore. But not the hub bearing.

I was only able to find assembled genuine toyota hubs or chinese

khalid traders (authorized NTN dealer) they can guide you where to get NTN bearings
they dont deal directly with hub bearings, but they gave me the contact of person who stocked these bearings.

nasir at plaza had these for Rs 3500 but it was a slightly different number NTN HUB008-75.

the person khalid traders referred me to was SIND Bearing Agency, that guy corrected me that the number should be HUB008-72. i verified this from parts list on the internet. the 75 bearing was for integras, the 72 was for civics. he gave it to me for Rs 3000.
