Difference btw normal and high octane petrol?

hey guys ,

i would like to know what is the difference btw normal petrol the one we gets from pumps and high octane petrol and where to get high octane petrol ? and how much a price difference in both ones and we can run any vehicle on high octane to get good performance or is there any restrictions please share your opinions thanks in advance.

the higher the octane rating the less resistant the fuel is to burnign too easily,.. the higher the compressino the higher the octane rating shoudl be so that the burn is more controlled and stable.

since fuel distrubution is almost all the same, the fuel is also almost all the same,.. the differnce is that in some cases people (manufacturers) put some additives into their fuels but overall super is the same (except for contaminants and particles) accross the contry,.. same with hi-octane.

running a mehran on hi-octane is sheer stupidity as the car could probably run on even 80 octane without knocking. however running 97 octane on a highly modified supra is also stupidity because the fuel woudl burn before it even started getting compressed,..

My car is more responsive on acceleration and give me average of 13.2km/liter with in city. While befor the experiment it was 12.4km/liter.

When I had Nissan Sunny Supersaloon twincam1.8 , I used to fill it up with Normal and then the next time with High Octance...and so on.....On High Octane, the response of the throttle was better.

Doesn't really make sense because HI OCTANE is supposed to burn faster and hence less mileage.

i - Consumption in terms of only Liters is same as the intake of Carb is not measuring the quality but quantity.

ii - Consumption/Performance in terms of KM/Ltr, should improve as with good compression; piston is up in cylinder and after spark it gets more pressure. (as mentioned by member above)

iii - Consumption in terms of Rs/KM, depends upon the rate of fuel and differential of performance gain in KM/Ltr. I think Rs/KM would increase.

Cost of octane fuel is more, as to make it bear compression and not to ignite just bcoz of compression. cross ref. Diesel engines ignite by compression (no plugs) not spark plugs and diesel is rough.

The main difference btw octaine and high octaine is that high octaine being pure petrole i good for your car's engine..thus it is expensive then normal octaine which contains gasoline and petrole.. it is of more value but cheaper then high octaine because it can cause your car engine to cease..

bhai ,it is the number of octane something related to molecules.My chemistry teacher told several years ago uring chapter of organic chemistry & told that more number of octanes will help in less knocking,

high no. of octane = less knocking (it has anti knocking handling capacity due to addition of chemicals)
less no. of octane = high knocking

high octance petrol(HOBC) has some extra additives (chemicals) mixed in petrol so they are charging u cost of ordinary + cost of additives.
Mostly these anti-knocking chemicals are:
The typical antiknock agents in use are:

• Tetraethyllead (Still in use as a high octane additive)
• Alcohol
• Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT)
• Ferrocene
• Iron pentacarbonyl
• Toluene
• Isooctane

petrol, when used in high compression internal combustion engines, has a tendency to knock (also called "pinging" or "pinking") and/or to ignite early before the correctly timed spark occurs (pre-ignition)

in ksa they have petrol
octance 91 (cheap price)
octane 95 (costly)
unfortunately in Pakistan,what our companies are marketing,even the good one is HOBC(with only octane 90 as highest ) which is even less that least quality petrol of KSA

so in short,
our best quality petrol < least quality petrol of KSA

Umair86pk asked the question in 2010. He probably finished his college, university, gotten married and may have kids. Just a thought. Although it is a dig, I want to add that TEL is considered toxic and not recommended for use anymore.

This is very old method for octane boosting no w a day the molecular sturture of fuel is changed by heating it
