Cost of running electrical equipment

hey all,

when it comes to electronics, i simply dont get it. watts, amperes, voltages dont make much sense to me. i have no idea about positive or negative wiring and which wire to connect with the other or function of ground.

here i would like someone good with electrical stuff put a tutorial on how to calculate cost of running electrical equipment by looking at their wattage such as ACs, irons, heaters and other stuff. how the unit system of wapda works and after using how many minutes ticks one unit and so on. that would be of great help if you could make is simple for people like me.

1 "unit" is 1 kw-hr. kw-hr means 1 kw of power for 1 hr. in other words, 1000W appliance running for one full hour makes one "unit".

say you have a 25watt bulb running 8hrs a day for whole month, total units for the month will be = 8*30*(25/1000) = 6 "unit" or kw-hr. each unit is somewhere around rs.10-20 or so depending on whether it is commercial, residential, agricultural connection, plus depending on how many units. check LESCO website for exact rates that are applicable to you, or check on bill.

I(current) in amps

now please pickup any nearest electrical equipment and read the specs. e.g a common domestic iron works at 220 VAC & 1500watt is consumed for maximum temperature, - an aircon connected on 220 VAC line at 1st start takes 15 amps and operates at 10~12 amps when compressor is running, at trip of compressor the fans consume approx. 3 amps at high fan

AC fan's don't consume 3 amps. Typically there are rated at 50w or about 0.22amps. So the saving on low fan speed is negligible.

It is a misconception I've tested on three split ACs in my home with an ampere meter. With compressor off they consume about 0.16amps. One Ac is Mitsubishi 1.5 ton, the other two are Mitsubishi Heavy duty 1.0 ton and Haier 1.0 ton.

I've run my AC on UPS (1000VA). It kept running the fans without a problem till the compressor turned on, then the UPS tripped. So suppose you're right.

Let me try and explain in simple words .. people say i'm good in giving explanations, perhaps it is because all my life i've been a salaried person working under different bosses .. .. anyway here it goes :

1000w = 1kw and if u use it for one hour you are billed 1 unit of electricity
with this in mind, calc units for anything you want to use

Billing : there are brackets (e.g under 300 units, 700units, 1000 units etc ) and there is type of connection like (peak and non-peak for 3phase digital meters and then the old analog meters) ... in the end it is number of units consumed in a months .. the bill could be as low as rs 3 per unit including taxes and as high as rs 23 per unit
