Comparison between Toyota Prado J90 and Toyota Land Cruiser J80

AoA dear pakwheelers! I'm sorry if a similar thread has been posted for the exact same models but I couldn't find any. So here's the story:

I recently went to Kashmir with family for holidays on a '16 Gli. There were a lot of off road patches on the way and after a lot of bottom scratching and bumper smashing, I realized something. I'm in dire need of an SUV if I want to continue this.

So anyways, I wanted the advice of experienced people here at PW. As you can see the two listed models in the title, they are the only ones in our budget range. I wanted to ask which one would be better in most aspects listed below. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

The Prado is common, but the land cruiser is much more luxury oriented and comfortable from what I've heard. Which one matters more?

Which one would be better option for 2 extra seats in the back? (Grandparents also like to travel)

I would definitely change the LCs engine to a 1kz turbocharged, it's own engines are too heavy in terms of fuel. Is that advisable?

Are parts for the LC readily available? Like headlights etc?

Any major price difference between the two?

As you may have noticed, I'm already inclined towards the LC because I think it looks smarter, and it is a more graceful ride. Any other things worth comparing that I may have left out, please mention below. Your responses will be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if the engine swapping you described above is possible or not but my opinion... plz dont do that.

I have 80 with 1HDT and gives me around 8 kmpl overall average.. remains almost same in city and long routes.

1KZ in a LC80 it'll be a mess in term of fuel consumption and you'll feel like riding a 50 years old horse so better stick to stock engine or go for a TZ Prado which will be good at fuel, responsive in terms of power plus it'll be having 7 seats as well to cater your needs.

Thank you for the warning So is it possible to change the transmission to manual? because all the vehicles listed here or on other sites are automatic. I think manual gives you more freedom to get the most kmpl out of the engine... auto is a different story. PS in hilly areas manual seems easier to drive, at least to me (b/c of the freedom thing)

Thanks for the heads up. As I said earlier, I'm more inclined towards the LC so if I find a manual Diesel one I'll get it, and wont try swaps.. If not, then I'll opt for Prado.

I think transmission could be changed but why you wanna go for all the hassles.
Just search for manual cars and you will find.
Also widen your search horizon, don't stick to one or two models.
Go for the one which is in good condition, otherwise you will spend a lot of time fixing the issues.

I personally prefer manual, auto has its own advantages, I think gear ratios are a bit different but that wont matter much.
With manual its less hassle, less things that can go wrong. (dhaka start :P)

I think auto is better in hilly areas, just my opinion, I have driven both auto and manual in both off-road and mountains and if you are a good driver it doesn't matter.

I have a Pradu and it gives me around 11 kmpl ...it's probably not that comfortable if u compare it with land cruiser but it has immense power with IKD engine ... I prefer Pradu over land cruiser.. And auto is lot better

Thank you for sharing this. Everyone has their own preferences. While auto is easier and hassle-free to drive, I prefer manual because it gives me a chance to do something from time to time rather than just sitting aimlessly for hours on end. But this is just my own experience. And as mentioned earlier in the thread, the thing with gear ratios causes a lesser fuel average. I have seen that for most 5speed manuals there is a 4 speed auto version. Maybe I'm wrong! And 1KD engine has to be kept really pampered when compared to its predecessor 1kz otherwise it gives a lot of problems, and our 3rd class diesel is not good for that engine.

All right then, I found a very clean car preowned by a relative of a friend, it's auto and since tranny doesn't matter I think I'm gonna go for it. Wish me luck with the bargain.

W/salam, IMO LC is the best car for long distance and off road because it incorporates a hell lot of power with pretty impressive comfort. My friend owns one so I've been sitting in and driving one for several years and it just feels like the best. The competition, Prado is also a worthy car but not quite what a j80 is. But beware, if you venture out in the land of 5kmpl and realise that you don't like it, there's no easy way out. Cheers!
