Civic X 2016-17 CVT Failure

Dear All,

I am looking to buy a Civic X 2016-17 model.
I heard there are some known faults of this generation like, AC coils, Steering Rack.
I also read somewhere that CVT failure is common in this model however, i read it mostly for 2018 model. Is it also common in 2016-17 model?
Can anyone guide? Is the CVT failure issue with all models of this generation? Is it possible to repair the transmission? if yes, what will be the cost?
Is this generation of Civic recommended?
Please share analysis.

I owned a 2017 from zero meter and sold the car in 2023 with 85000 km. Yes it had a steering rack rattle which was replaced under warranty. It had a freezing cold ac which never required any attention in my ownership. I believe that the best thing one can do to protect the ac evaporator is to always keep the fresh air vent closed.

At least, I have not come across any comments regarding CVT failures being an issue with this generation of Civic. The manual calls for CVT oil replacement around 40,000 km. The car you buy, make sure that the services have been done at the proper intervals. If you are completely unfamiliar with this generation's service intervals, I would suggest to visit a 3S dealership and have a chat with any one of the service advisors with the 5000km, 20000km and 40000km service menu. After 40,000 it repeats again.

Steering rack can happen anytime

AC issue some have it , others dont have it.

Get car with service history.

There have been a few CVT failure cases. Our 2018 Civic's CVT broke while reversing out of the driveway one day even though the car was perfectly maintained by dealership. Mileage was about 120k back then. After CVT replacement, it did not have any issues and was driven upto 225k before we sold it.

CVT failure is rare but very much a real thing in Civic X. But despite all the issues of the 10th gen, it is still one of the better cars to own.

Back in 2019, Honda was asking 500k rupees for the replacement. But we sourced a cvt transmission from Bilal Gunj and got it replaced from Honda themselves which ended up costing around 300k - 350k rupees in the end. The prices will be very different nowadays though.

A friend of mine has faced CVT failure on his 2017 or 18 civic oriel at around 80k mileage. A kabuli transmission was sourced for replacement. Honda dealership quoted around 0.9 Mil for new transmission and around 0.5 for used (kabuli but sourced and replaced by dealership).

The friend went for Replacement from bilal ganj that cost around 0.35 million and the vehicle drove fine afterward but had more engine/transmission noise (no specific noise could be pointed but overall the drive terrain was noisier at high speeds than it was previously) the vehicle was sold soon after that.

Honda Avenue Islamabad doing CVT belt replace in around 2lac so I dont think a big concern.
