Connect one end of the negative cable to the booster battery and one to the dead cars engine lift hook or some big bolt near the starter, if no such thing is present and the battery is hidden in the car somewhere like under the seat or in the boot (BMW, MB etc) then it has dedicated jump ports in the engine room.
Connect the booster positive to the dead car positive and let the booster car run for about 5 minutes to charge the dead battery, attempt to start.
To start a diesel car, you need thicker cables, a good booster battery (1000 CCA). You can start a diesel with a civic as booster too if you follow some rules and have thick guage cables.
1 - connect as required and leave the booster car running for atleast 15 minutes to somewhat charge the battery
2 - glow and start the engine.
3 - failure to start requires another top up of 10 minutes and making sure the cables have not heated up.
