Battery and jumper cables connection

Hi,

I was using jumper cables to jump start my battery which had died but it sparked and I then realised that I was connecting the terminals incorrectly. Will this cause any serious issue?

The car is a Toyota Belta. Thankfully nothing happened. Then connected the terminals and started the other car and then mine started properly.

What is the proper way to use the jumper cables?

If it started there's no issues. As long as the battery's charging and u have no lights on ur dash. Using jumper cables. Mmmmmm if got it started you know how it works. Couple of thinks u need to know.
First use the right cables.
As soon as the cars started remove cables .. To much volts will cook ur ecu blow fuses. All sorts can happen.
And to start diesel car u need another diesel engined car.
I remove the earth black cable first.

connection is always in parallel positive of first battery with positive of second and negative of first with negative of second

the volts remain at 12~14 no matter how many batteries are in parallel, If you connect them in series Bye bye bijli.

Connect one end of the negative cable to the booster battery and one to the dead cars engine lift hook or some big bolt near the starter, if no such thing is present and the battery is hidden in the car somewhere like under the seat or in the boot (BMW, MB etc) then it has dedicated jump ports in the engine room.

Connect the booster positive to the dead car positive and let the booster car run for about 5 minutes to charge the dead battery, attempt to start.

To start a diesel car, you need thicker cables, a good booster battery (1000 CCA). You can start a diesel with a civic as booster too if you follow some rules and have thick guage cables.

1 - connect as required and leave the booster car running for atleast 15 minutes to somewhat charge the battery
2 - glow and start the engine.
3 - failure to start requires another top up of 10 minutes and making sure the cables have not heated up.

if ur using a secondary battery to help the primary battery (placed in the car) to jump start the car, this is how u do it. heads up. make sure the switch is off.

1) place the 2nd battery near the front of the car. make sure the jumper cables are long enough to reach the battery in the car.
2) connect the + terminal of the secondary battery to the + of the primary battery.
3) once the + terminals are connected, connect the - terminal of the2nd battery to the - of the primary battery.
4) start the car.
5) Now first remove the wire from the - terminals.
6) once that is done, remove the cable from the + terminals.

NOTE:
this method basically connect the 2 batteries in parallel.
the reason why we connect the - cable after the + and remove it before the + is to prevent short circuiting
make sure that the wire that is connect to the + of any of the 2 batteries dsnt come in contact with any of the cars metal surfaces.
make sure the + and - cables dont come in contact.
if the 2nd battery dosnt have enough juice, it may not be able to start the primary battery. u may help the primary battery by connecting it in parallel to a secondary battery placed in another car with the engine running. the procedure is the same as stated above.
Let the batteries be connected for a while so the primary may get charged before u attempt to start the car from it. once the car has started, let the 2ndry battery stay connected to the primary so it may charge a bit (in case ur using a standalone battery)

when you short circuited the batteries your car switch must be off...otherwise ecu would have fried...or some fuses would have blown..

DOUBLE check wires before connecting..

Just one question. When connecting the jumper cables, should the car with the working battery be started when connecting the cables to the car with the dead battery?

We did it with both cars ignitiion switched off and then first started the car with the working battery and after that the car with the dead battery.
