Automotive Designing as a Career?

Salam guys,

Well InshAllah as my o-level is ending in june '10, m trying to have my mind set on a particular career for my future. and the one i have finally chosen is automotive designing. i know there is not much scoop of this profession in pakistan and as per my knowledge non of the universities offer autmotive designing courses in pakistan, m ready to go to uk or any other place. so could u guys please guide me to some good and reputated universities if any one of you know that offer this course? i read on a site that u have to have maths and physics as ur majors and MashAllah se m quiet good in both the subjects. on the other hand ur sketching skills also have to be good. and one more thing, please guys dont confuse this with automotive enginering as autmotive designing is only related to the exterior and interior designs of vehicles as well as their colour and trim designs. so if u guys can help me in this thing i'll be really thankful to u all.

I would advise you, if you plan to live in Pakistan until death or before or however. To go for Industrial Designing from University of Karachi. ID covers all, auto, products, etc etc. Many of the famous auto designers are only Bachelors in Industrial Design, and if you intend to specialize in Auto designing, then you can go abroad for Master in Auto Designing.

The four year bachelor was introduced couple of years back.

Remember, Pakistan has nothing, you can be the one!!

There is no such thing as "automotive designing" out there in Pakistan. You are good at Photoshop, do the most effective thing and learn "web layout designing" which is actually going to give you some money in return.

When people say "there is no scope of such and such things" its basically because no body wants it.

Why would someone in the right mind pay for designing cars in Photoshop? The prototype of the design given to the companies by the designers is actually a "real car" not just a Photohsop image. No motor-company in Pakistan is actually making the 'designs' here.

Web designing is the most common and most effective way of utilizing your Photoshop experience.

@bilalyusrat: i am completely aware that there is no scoop of being an automobile designer in pakistan but international companies hire you if u are a automotive designer. when u are doing masters in automobile desigining, u have to do internships at various automotive companies and eventually they hire you if they are impressed with ur work. m InshAllah thinking to enroll in Georgia Institute of Technology after doing my A's Level. they offer a 4 year bachelors programme in Industrial Designing and after that i'll do masters in Automotive Designing preferably from some university in the Uk InshAllah. As far as working as a web designer is concerned, i think one should do what he loves doing. i have a great urge for designing cars and InshAllah i know if i'll work hard, i'll succeed in becoming an automobile designer one day InshAllah.

Photoshop is a field where you design all kinds of things. AND designing cars is not Photoshop. May be 3Ds Max or Maya, but definitely not Photoshop.

I am running a software house in Rawalpindi. I have spoken about freelancing on FM100 as well. I really am telling you something I know.

I will 'never' suggest you to do something that you don't like. But you should pursue something realistic. If you're totally sure that there really are some places which actually hire people for designing cars, then sure go ahead. But in my limited knowledge, this kind of business does not exist.

We keep reviewing projects throughout the day. In the last 5 years, I have not come across a single project that asks our designer to do something with a car.. May be make some edits in some image of a car's website.. but that's a very small part.. no body would hire anyone for doing this.. any Photoshop designer can do this.. don't you think?

There is life outside software houses, Banks, Advertising agencies also, if this wasnt the case then there was no need of any Engineers, Doctors, Lawyers, etc in this world

I am doing Product designing, maths and physics for my a levels, theres a lot scope in designing. One of my mates here is also doing product designing but hes in A2 he will be going to coventry for automotive designing. I might take automotive designing as well after my A levels but lets see what happens. btw photoshops not gona help you designing cars, get a pencil and paper and start sketching and see how you do.

You should have completely read my post before responding. I think in excitement you've missed out this part:

You see, this again is very realistic. Most of the People in Pakwheels assume Automotive designing is about 'drawing' or may be sketching something.

Search YouTube for "Skyline Prototype" I think you'll find a BBC Video about how they produced the prototype for approval.

Its DEFINITELY not about Photoshop. I even doubt 3Ds Max and Maya.

I am not at all a designer of Photoshop, yet I'm sure I can make better 'modified' cars than our brother here who is interested in "Automotive Designing."

You see when you're in a business, you really know things going on around you even if they are sharply not related to what you do.

But when you're in school, trust me you don't know anything about what's in the market. Reason being.. the lack of exposure may be? But I really don't think someone sitting inside a software house doesn't know its raining outside. This is absurd.
