If your mechanics dont listen to you then you either dont have access to good mechanics or the ones currently working on your car are really really incompetent. btw I have seen really really bad cases of transmission failures when someone bought used transmission from the scrappie and it died exactly 10 days after service. I have also seen some really weird transmission failures, One was due to the scrappie/dealer or someone filled it with gear oil mixed with diesel to be thin as ATF - it promptly wipes the clutches clean and you have no drive left. I have also drained a transmisson whose ATF was mixed with coolant (accident in the country of origin etc) and the scrap dealer simply drained the sump filled with junk ATF and handed it over, needless to say the TC was bad too, so were most clutches and removing a 4X4 hilux A/T is a real major task. Once I removed the front pump, the damage was evident. The problem was the front planet set was completely chipped due to mechanical impact of broken rollers from a thrust bearing.
The other major problem is the lockup torque converter clutch, most would shudder or be rough to engage - and every tech/mechanic in Karachi would say - bhai set to hai, to which I told them to drive a similar car whose transmission I rebuilt and had a refurbished torque converter put in. e.g. a corolla ETX 4 spd shifts smooth as whipped cream, not firm like a Honda
Used transmissions are like "satta" you never know how well the players are feeling before the match. BUT - to everyone their own, your money your choice. and fyi transmission repair mechanics can be found really easily in Pakistan if you look. The biggest blindfold for everyone is that they charge a little high due to their use of proper tools and service equipment.
But to any average "banda" in Pakistan owning an A/T car and looking for trans repair outside Bhai Pheru while stuck on the highway, a used trans sounds like a good idea.
