7afe Indus Corolla very high fuel consumption

Aoa, I recently converted my Toyota 2oD engine to 7afe automatic transmission. The drive is smooth, and there is no black smoke but the fuel consumption is extremely low (7 km/l without AC and 6 km/l with AC). The wheels are stock and the spark plugs plugs are new (boche). What could be the potential problem, and can anyone guide me towards a honest and skilled mechanic in Lahore who can tackle this issue. Thanks

7afe and auto transmission means its 3 speed automatic. In no way it would give you better mileage than 6kmpl or 7kmpl within City and if you are lucky it would go till 10kmpl max on highway. You should have asked for consumption values before going for swap.

7AFE automatic gives 8-10km/l if its in proper nick. As poster says he swapped the engine maybe its not wired up properly or has some bad o2 or map.

Those are manual 7AFE which have better fuel consumption then automatic. Manual one can give 12km/l.

Brother don't mind but you did big mistake of converting diesel to petrol
I have a lot of experience in these 16 valve engines and have used 4e and 4a also.
Don't waste your time just switch to Cng
In my Indus corolla xe with 4a 1600cc manual transmission the average was 8 on highway maximum
Average on Cng is good
I am surprised why you did the swap the average of diesel is much better than petrol

Hi Shoaib sb, actually the diesel engine was giving issues and required an overhaul. I had read and heard that the automatic engine would have a mileage of atleast 10 KM/L, therefore went for the switch.
Also, the advise to switch to CNG is worth considering. How much approximate expense would be incurred in the process?

I also have a 7a powered indus corolla.

Following are the possible reasons:

Only use a double tip spark plug if you have the engine with two ignition coils and NO distributor. This is a wasted spark ignition system and the engine requires double tip spark plugs to work properly!

The engine has a combustion pressure sensor mounted in the block. You can see its wires coming out of the timing belt cover. This sensor is used to switch the engine from 12 to 16 valve mode by opening a set of butterflies mounted in the intake manifold. These butterflies are triggered by vacuum when a signal is received from the ecu based on the input from the combustion pressure sensor. In case of improper operation, the engine defaults to 16 valve mode all the time and hence cannot give you good fuel economy.

This particular 7afe is also sensitive the the correct map sensor and oxygen sensor so check the part numbers on the net and confirm.

A properly wired up engine should be giving you no diagnostic trouble codes so check those too.

4 months ago I was using Indus corolla xe with 5a 1500cc weak engine like smoke and weak rings,at that time I was planning to swap that weak engine with another better kabli engine like 5a-fe with auto transmission but didn't find uncut wired engine in rwp and I also asked from many well known mechanics can you give me guaranty of better fuel consumption,the refused to take any responsibility and then I realized two things,
First our mechanics and electrician can't swap and wire it properly they have no idea about These engines
Second mostly engines have completed their life and you will not find any Japanese engine
all Malaysian and Australian engines and finally because I love Indus corolla shape I sold the petrol car and purchased the diesel one genuine 2.od no tension good average

Brother I have the exact same problem. My car is doing 4kmpl currently with ac.

I havent changed the spark plugs.

The engine is 7AFE but with a distributor and not a coil.

There are some other issues as well like the pick in lower gears is not satisfactory.

Did you find amy solution to it?.

Kindly mention some.details about your car ? Which model ? Any Swap history ? Auto or manual tranny ?
Is the engine properly wired up ? Means are you seeing any check engine light in the speedometer.

What is the condition of spark plugs ? Throttle body service ?

To me, it seems like your engine is not wired up properly thats why its giving you issues.

As I also recently swapped 7a in my 94 corolla with manual tranny & Alhamdolillah I am getting 13 kmpl in city with AC on light foot.

Kindly post some pics of your engine bay, they will give us some idea about the condition of wiring & other things.

7AFE has 4-speed automatic transmission with Overdrive, in Australia models transmission model number is A240L, while in late Japanese engines they used Ect transmission, that is A240Ea and A245E

7AFE is an excellent economical engine provided if properly wires and you have all the sensors that came in the original chassis,
and the most common issue regarding fuel consumption is its catalytic converter and 2 oxygen sensors, you must check that your car have both the oxygen sensors otherwise you couldn't get the good fuel average, feel free to ask if you have further queries,

bro 1st one will be located on the exhaust manifold, which is called main oxygen sensor, the other one can be found in the base near the catalytic converter, called sub oxygen sensor , and make it sure your catalytic converter is not blocked, or damaged, your fuel average is dependent on that

Its a old thread still I will reply for any future users of 7AFE.
About the 2nd O2 I am not sure if newer generation of 7afe came with 2 O2 but mine had only one. I guess same will be the case with his car. This for sure is a wiring issue and you need to connect the check engine light and find out codes.

When I swapped 7afe in my car it was running in a limp mode simply bcoz if i rem it was STA connection to ECU that was missing. Mechanic and electrition were clueless about the bad mileage of just liks yours of 6 or 7 KMPL and poor performance. I took my car home connected check engine light and started checking codes and ECU wiring and all and in the end the usually ignore STA in 4AFE and 5AFE swaps was the reason. 7AFE ECU needs it more than 5AFE and when I connected it, the ECU Came out of the Limp mode and everything was back to normal. I use to get 12 to 14 KMPL and on CNG was around 180 to 200.

I had a similar experience converting my Diesel engine for 7afe 1994 year. My car was heavy on fuel. Did lots of small change like spark plugs iridium and placed compatible fuel injectors and also Petrol exhaust for 1800 ccengine and now alhamdolila my car gave an average of 14km consumption over previous 10 km average on high Waylon light foot. .my further target is to replace ECUs which is for auto engine and presently looking for manual ECU which will further improve the car consumption.
