Their manual says to start with 5W30 oil in a new car but why they are using 20W50 in new cars?
my driver used to get it done but after 3 years of usage i once saw the job card book mentioning it TMO-PET-SL/CF...
will this much thick oil in the car working for 3 years in the car engine have made a certain clearance in ring/pistons or all moving parts...
my car has run 76000 Kms and want to switch to some better option like 5W50 Mobil 1. Should i go for it ...
any effect on engine life???
pls guide with your experience and knowledge.
regards,

You can switch to 5w30 if the engine is fine even after it has clocked 100k kms.

Now much mileage passed on car. If engine good. You may switch to 10w40. Much suitable for this envirinment as well.

Stick to what the manual says. Don't ever agree with what they tell you to do unless the manual mentions it. Yes using a thicker oil will cause your car do be less efficient and it is not recommended. Also at service stations workers may try to school you to use a thicker oil for your car due to mileage.

Just go with what the manual says and use good quality oil and change it at the set intervals. You can never go wrong!

Ignorance, nothing else
Stick to 5w30 fully synthetic

These dealerships will pour anything, which is available to them in cheap, and in abundance.

Well, based on feedback and suggestions, my opinion would be to opt for either 10w-30 by Caltex / havoline, or 10w-40 by ZIC, provided engine health is perfect in all respects, etc.

Both are value to money brands and options in their respective leagues IMO.

It may also be avoided. Its almost twice as thick as 5w-30, or even 10w-30.

If 5w-30 had been poured in your car since day 01, then I would have suggested to continue with it and no need to change, however, now, you car has clocked almost ~76,000 Kms in 03 years, on that ridiculously thick oil.

If you switch to 5w-30 now, it might be possible that nothing happen, but however, if after some time, like months, engine oil consumption starts, you see smoke from the exhaust, etc. then who would take responsibility, for recommended, but wrong engine oil grade at this stage? I think none.

So, its better to play safe, and choose between 10w-30 or 10w-40, instead of 5w-30. Rest, your car, your money, your choices! :+1:

Best of luck! :+1:

20W-50 is poured so as to clean up the new engine. It shall be changed at 1st free service, or at 5000 km service.

you can ask the dealership to use 5W-30 refer to the particular page from the user manual. Insist upon it and if it is declined or given an excuse of warranty issue plainly ask dealership to give that in writing about warranty.

make sure to change engine oil filter as well.

stay safe drive safe wear mask do not go out without valid reason better stay home wash hands more often

exactly, i was also baffled by that. It is not only in Pak, but also in Saudia.
after 2 years i found out that Toyota was pouring in 10W40, whilst the manual says 5W30 preferred. : (

There are cctv cameras there. You can see your car live from the cameras but it's not the same as Pakistan.
Like in Pakistan, it is Indus Motor Company
In saudia there are two, one is Abdul Latif Jameel and the other is Halwani
The Halwani people are good. Wo jaane dete hain but ALJ dont let you go in
They also offer free car wash after any service but normal service charges hi bohat hain

Dealerships buy oil in bulk drums and totes - and in countries will mass illiteracy (like Pakistan, KSA, all of GCC) - they can get away with shoving junk and throwing pompous words to the vehicle owner like "grantee kensill hojaigi"

so probably at the time of the last purchase the dealership did for oil the 10W40 API (whatever) was the cheapest/discount/75% off - so they got it.

yes, i am talking about ALJ , but through camera you cannot note the oil grade they pour in.
but the question is, why do they do so... i mean if the manual says 5/30, why don't they just get that damn oil and put it in ...
i think, A) maybe they are using semi-synthetic (cheaper) ..and B) of course they will not be responsible for anything once warranty (3 years or 60,000 km) is over.. so it's kind of a win/win situation for Toyota/ALJ

exactly !

i am using 0w20 in car with mileage above 1 lac. should i shift to 20w50 and what is the reason for that?

definitely NOT. these myths are created by mechanics mostly.
you only need to change to thicker oil if your car starts burning/reducing the lighter oil grade, otherwise be it 10 thousands km and engine is running fine, should keep on using the same oil grade~
