I got a chance to drive the 2007 Jaguar XK convertible yesterday and I was quite impressed by it. Last week I drove the BMW 650Ci convertible and I thought it was a big let down from BMW so I just wanted to see how the new XK compares to it. I've also driven the Mercedes SL 500 a few months ago so this is sort of a comparo of the 3 convertibles. Unfortunately I forgot to bring my camera so there aren't any pics. The car that I drove was dark blue with a dark blue top.
I was a bit sceptical about the new Jag XK when it was first released because lately Jaguar hasn't released any cars that I thought were on par with their German rivals. The New XK is based on a all aluminum chassis which is bonded and riveted, just like the latest Aston Martins. The overall shape of the Jaguar also has an Aston Martin silhouette as it was designed by ex-Aston Martin designer Ian Callum. I personally think the the XK is the best looking car of the 3 convertibles, although many would argue that the SL 500 looks better. The interior was nicely finished with real wood, which is getting harder to find nowadays. I was also surprised by how much room the XK had but the rear seats are not meant to be used by adults and were just installed for insurance purposes.
The engine note on startup was a bit subdued and it would be nice to hear a more vocal exhaust. The XK is only available with a ZF 6 speed automatic with steering mounted paddle shifters. The upshift and downshifts were pretty quick and there is a built in blip on downshifts. I thought that the trans was similar to the one in the DB9 in terms of operation. The power for the 4.2 liter V8 is not overwhelming at 300hp but feels adequate. What impressed me most about the car was the taut and composed ride. I was expecting a very floaty suspension which is typical of Jaguars but I guess some of the Aston Martin ride and handling prowess has made its way into the XK. The brakes were pretty impressive with nice weight but were not grabby at all. Unfortunately I was not able to do a proper brake check but they did feel like they were up to task. I was expecting very indirect steering from the XK but I was surprised by the almost BMW like directness without being darty. I walked away impressed by the overall package and if I had to decided between the 3 cars I would definitely pick the XK. The XK is a pure GT car with enough sports car elements to make it enjoyable to drive. This is exactly how the Bentley Continental GT should feel but it falls far short of the mark. The XK is an excellent alternative for people who are looking for an Aston Martin DB9 but don't want to spend the extra $80k.
I apologize again for not having any pics.
I will be test driving the Maserati Coupe on Monday and will have a write up with pics, Inshallah.
