1KZ diesel, 1KD Diesel or petrol 2.8, which is best?

Petrol variant has less maintenance but too heavy on fuel. 1KZ-TE is better in terms of maintenance as compared to 1KD-FTV. 1KD-FTV is not designed to run on low quality diesel as in Pakistan. Nozzle injectors get damaged soon and are also too costly. it is better to go for 1KZ. As far as petrol and diesel fuel consumption is compared then diesel gives better mileage than petrol. My vote is for 1KZ. Rest you can wait for more experts' opinion.

Brother! As far as I know diesel engines give better fuel economy as compared to petrol variants. 2700CC 3RZ-FE in Surf may give u around 4-5 km in city drive and at most 6 in long. 1KZ even gives 8 in a litre on long drive. Dont know about fuel consumption of 3400CC petrol.

If you want power and performance, get petrol V6 version ... its a beast. Otherwise IKZ is the best for Pakistan gives arround 8km/l. Petrol one with 2700 cc will give slightly less.

Let me explain why Diesel SUVs give better mileage.

As you know in Saudi Arabia all the cars are petrol but Heavy vehicles like trucks and buses are diesel why? Cant they built heavy petrol engines for these trucks and buses.

Actually to pull heavier weights it needs more torque and as you know petrol engines have low torque as compared to diesel thats why in trucks and buses only diesel engines are used.

Now coming to your scenario you live in mountainous area I have been to Astore, Rama, Deosai, Skardu, Shigar, Khaplu, Hunza nad way back to Lahore in August 2013 on my 1989, HJ60, 2H, 3980 cc diesel and I did not felt a single problem anywhere. Because diesel are meant for mountainous areas.

You can also witness that in Europe specially mountainous areas even Mercedes and BMW luxurious sedans have diesel engines.

I would suggest to go for 1KZTE preferably manual for better fuel economy or auto for luxury.

hi, i would like to add my 2 cents. I can only talk about the diesel engines, as i have very little experience with petrol engines (LIVING IN GILGIT, WHY WOULD YOU PUT A PETROL ENGINE IN AN OFFROAD VEHICLE, WHY?).
SO, coming to the 1kd.
1) they don't sell pure high quality diesel in Pakistan, and the diesel we get here will ruin your 1kd in max 2 years.
2) too much electronics in 1kd. we don't have mechanics even in Karachi who can fix a 1kd, let's not even talk about Gilgit. (My mechanic has opened the same 1kd twice in 7 months because it has problems all the time)
3) NEVER buy anything with a 1kd, especially not in a country like Pakistan.

it is a known fact that diesel engines are economical than their counterpart petrol engines. i have driven a 2L, 3L and currently driving a 1kz-te automatic. and i can assure you that you're going to get 7-8kmpl if you buy a surf with auto transmission. Expect more economy and fun if you get a manual transmission. Nothing beats a nice manual gear, you control the vehicle, the vehicle doesn't control you (like automatic transmission). but manufacturers are just dumbing things down for the average Joe. and manual transmission is much more durable than auto. I agree with Mr. Jahanzeb Nasir.
1kz-te on the other hand is a beast! the pick, acceleration etc everything is good. and it's not as loud as the 2L/3L. It just makes 30% of the noise that the L series engines make. Living in Gilgit, 1kz-te suits your need.
