1991 Mitsubishi Pajero 3 door- changing engine

I have a 3 door 1991 Mitsubishi Pajero.
I wanted to ask if anybody had advice regarding changing the engine on the Mitsubishi Pajero.

It currently has a 2500 cc "4D56" diesel engine. I would like to change the engine. Would it be possible to put a Toyota Engine in this vehicle?
I was thinking a modern more efficient engine like the 1KD-ftv engine from Hilux/Prado.

Any suggestions? Is this conversion possible?

i have seen best suitable toyota swap would be a 5vz engine with slim vigo radiator.. it mates to original pajero auto transmission as well

5VZ would be even better engine. I just checked it, it has even more power.
My Pajero is a manual gearbox. I guess I could buy the toyota transmission with the engine?

Have had both Pajero (1991) and Land Cruiser (1989) for many years now and just not impressed with the Mitsubishi reliability. Engine in Pajero is weak now but in general good condition.
Want to give the Pajero some new life. Partly want to change engines just for the fun of it.
Also I am very impressed with the 1KD engine. It produces power and yet uses so little fuel.

What is wrong with 3.5 Mitsubishi GDI? I heard mechanics are unaware of GDI technology and usually damages it

1KD is very good engine no doubt but i wont recommend it in a Mitsubishi Pajero. You should put Mitsubishi motor, 3.0 Petrol one or 4D56T. In toyota one a pakwheeler swapped Toyota 3L into his pajero 3door
