Please avoid JDMs like plagues, especially 660cc ones. First car has to be as reliable yet worry-free as possible, even the least experienced mechanic should be able to fix these in emergencies.
If the cargo space is not important, then old Swift DLX. Decent ground clearance. Decent features like ABS and Immobilizer. Decent fuel economy, but low maintenance. Recently, it cost me up to Rs. 7,000 on engine oil, oil filter, air filter, and cabin filter. For nine years, other than regular maintenance, it has proven to be extremely reliable.
Issues with the car are the audible AC vents, side mirror's low visibility, and its braking system cannot tolerate old brake fluid, destroying the seals.
Cultus VXL should be an alternate choice, if anyone owns a new Cultus, please share your experience.
Both cars should have decent resale value.
If cargo space is needed, a 2008 or newer Toyota Corolla 1.3L GLi, or a 2009 or newer Honda City 1.3L manual should be a decent choice, and both at least have ABS. Unlike Corolla, City's resale value should be decent.
None of these cars will be in the best condition, especially Corolla and City. Repairs should be expected, but they mustn't be neglected/abused or be in serious accidents. Once again, having a main mechanic who knows what they are doing is a must.
