Salam
my 2 cents.
I have toyed with the idea of buying an old SUV for a long time. Almost bought one (paid the token but walked out of the deal because the vehicle did not have the complete paper work as claimed by the seller). It was a Gen 1 pajero. I have test driven older pajeros (both gen 1 and 2), Land cruiser prados and toyoto surf.
I have test driven Surf with 2LT and also 1KZ. The thing is even if you find a vehicle in good condition still the driver seating position in the surf is pretty cramped up and uncomfortable. Same goes for the rear passenger compartment. Overall I found pajeros to be the most comfortable but then again they dont have the same reliability as the toyota 4x4s of that era.
If you have 2.5 million laying around and you aim on buying a vehicle that you would not be using much then you probably have another car as your daily. Why not sell that car and add 2.5 million and get yourself a BRV or even a Glory 580 Pro. The reason i suggest this is because for journeys to north, most of the time you are on carpeted roads (almost 80 % if you ask me) or roads that sedans can travel on without much difficulty.
Then there is the 5-10 % part where your actual need is a bit of ride height as you traverse on unpaved and slight bit of uneven gravel pathways. Then there is the last bit of 5-10 % where you actually need a vehicle with 4x4 options (low or high range, diff locks and all). Most people do not go for that when traveling with family.
A good condition used Glory 580 Pro (2022 model) or BRV would easily fall in the 5 million bracket. They can sit 5-7 adults easily. Roof racks can be put on them. Or you can stretch it up a little and buy a 2013-14 Fortuner (that probably falls in the 6 million mark or slight bit of more).
Even the stonic has a bit of higher ride height compared to other sedans. The advantage of these vehicles is that when traveling on motorways you wont have to drive on 80 with constant worrying about breaking down while you'd still be able to take advantage of ride height when needed.
I have seen BRVs in Deosai, Oshan x7, Kia sportage, Honda Vezel, Suzuki WagonR and even Alsvin.
