Hi Prado Experts,

I am about to buy a 2003-2005 3.4 petrol TZ or TZ-G prado, In'Sha'Allah. I need expert opinion on the said purchase, like which version is better, which engine is better. I am confused that TZ-G doesn't have the sunroof, however it does have electronic or hydraulic suspension for elevating or lowering the suspension. Any other info would be highly appreciated.

I went to the market to buy a Fortuner, but Thank God, I did not buy it and a fried of mine suggest Prado instead.

I am not sure but i think TZ is the fully loaded version in 120 series prado. The TZ-G comes in current model 150 series.

TZ is fully loaded model with AHC, dual ac, sunroof etc which comes in 3.4 litre 5vz engine.
Rest i can say they are over priced as i have seen plenty of tx models for which people demand 4-4.4 million

I would suggest you to go for 2005 onward models with 2TR-FE 2700 cc petrol engine because this engine is still available in market and its parts are easily available.

Secondly 2005 onward models came with 5 speed auto whereas previous models have only 4 speed auto and bad fuel economy.

I would suggest dont go near 5VZ-FE 3400 cc petrol as its a fuel guzzler and its obsolete engine now, I once went to Forward Kahuta in AJ&K on an offical tour on 2003 prado TZ without sunroof with same 3400cc petrol engine and she gave 4km/l average and on motorway @120-130 km/l she gave 6km/l only.

Yes jehanzeb is right. 3400cc doesnt give milage above 6km. So if milage isnt issue. .3400 cc is best n powerful

You can get around 8 km/l with 2TR-FE with 5 speed auto in city and on long route you can go around 10 km/l @ 110-120 km/h.

When I drove the above mentioned Prado, the power/acceleration seems just fine. I want to know:

Does 2.7 liter petrol engine Prado seems under power?

This engine is quiet common in a lot of vehicles specially Fortuner, Toyota Hiace etc.

However as Prado is full time 4wd as compared to others maybe this could be the reason for feeling underpower.

If you are comparing it with some diesel version with same capacity engine than definitely it is underpower.

Last September I was coming from Isl-Lhe on motorway on our return journey from Hunza around 3 am at night.

My friend was driving my 1999 Toyota Surf with 1KZ-TE @ 110 km/h and a Prado probably 2010 model crossed us at very high speed, my friend throttled to check the speed of Prado and after 5 mins we crossed it on 160 km/h @3000 rpm only. The only reason I asked my friend not to go beyond that speed was my old tyres otherwise it could have gone upto 180km/h i.e the max limit of my speedometer.

And the Prado guy was pushing his best to catch us but he hardly managed 145 km/h max.

That being said it seems its little underpower considering its full time 4wd.

Prado 2009 onwards is not full time 4wd. I have driven Prado upto 170km/hr on motorway. I had no problem accelerating it upto 150 but it was struggling after that. The engine is under powered of course if compared with a 4L engine but I don't find any issue with 2.7L engine. You can not drag race with a Civic (but definitely with a Corolla) but it's quite quick and responsive. I am sure it would beat a Surf or old version Prado but again SUV is not meant for that. If you want to race then get a car

I have driven the 2011 model briefly and i do not feel it is underpowered. It feels lighter than my altis even, just glides in city driving but when above 120 acceleration is not effortless but it still goes.. max around 160ish

Well as per the conversation it seems Prado is not a good buy because 2005 onwards ones are very hard to find in TZ as almost all are tx and demands above 5 million . I believe its negotiatiable but again problem now a days is too many dealers brokers.. people buy them add 1 million to the price and just wait for a bakra.. very hard to find a genuine seller now a days especially in case of suv.. most seller who are willing to sell have over used LCs which is again a problem.

Hum bhe ya Dil ka dard rakhtay hai but call me one of those unlucky ones who has not been able to find a clean 4x4 in my budget range(these days its around 2.5-2.8 million) for a clean reliable vehicle. If i ever find one will be replaced my 2015 altis grande.. will again is a problem of sorts

As a substitute you can search for a 2005 onwards Toyota Surf (my personal favorite very optimum SUV) with same engine 2TR-FE 2700cc petrol with 5 speed auto, the advantages are:

1. its very aerodynamic design and didnt feel like 12 years old model at all,
2. it is part time 4wd means you will not feel underpowered as compared to similar model prado,
3. You can get a good vehicle around 3-3.5m max

Cons are these are quiet low in numbers so you have restricted area to search.

best way is to get car record extracted from Japan will cost from 4,500 to 6,000 for that u may PM me

since car must have been exported around 15 years ago
