Model 3 also the first ever car to come without any key or fob. All done via tesla app on smartphone via Bluetooth. As backup option they give NFC cards to owners.

Took model X for a test drive here in the UK. The acceleration is simply amazing. Very addictive actually. Liked the minimalism and the elegant simplicity of the interior. I was a touch disappointed by the stiffness of the ride but that could be due to the low profile tyres. The car corners really well given its low centre of gravity; low ground clearance also means that it would be useless off the road. Quite a remarkable car but I am not convinced that it is worth that much. With all goodies, top of the line model can cost well above £100k.

3 on the other hand can be a very lucrative alternative. Eagerly waiting for it's launch in the UK.

you guys are ommiting one giant factor.

The few giant car companies that survive today do that based on one simple rule.

PARTS

ford was the first to do that, they made giant warehouses of Fomoco parts where rebuilt/ready to use parts were available for every customer.

MB did that and toyota (everyone's favorite) are following exactly that. That is why you will find a toyota in literally every nook and cranny of the world and can be serviced/repaired by even illiterate people.

Tesla repair is at best "a shit show" - even small parts take months in USA and there are no dealerships to drive upto or even order parts from. If you guys are interested in that, look it up.

Right now the Tesla S is the rich man's toy to feel good, the X is the rich man's wife and children carrier and they are focused on new sales only. A business model like that is not quite fortunate for a car manufacturer.

elon musk doesnt strike me as a fool, he can take care of repair supply chain after the "manufacturing hell" of 2018 is over

plus, why would a tesla break down ? there arent any moving parts per se except the electric motor

If you research car reliability reviews... tesla is doing bad, they are below average. But they acknowledge that and are working to streamline their supply chain and fix the bugs. With any new technology, their are kinks and mr musk is on it.

how about if the air shocks leak? - the car slams to the ground and unless you want to scrape your 70K car on the road for every driven inch - its called broken down. Or how about if you hit a giant pot hole and break a control arm, ball joint and wheel rim? Or how about breaking a drive axle CV on it?

There is a ton more to a car than just an engine.

e.g. if the tesla door handle breaks - you cannot do squat, replacement is required - Seems like your view of the pasture is always from the fence, try walking the pasture,,

last time i checked :--

1. tesla has no radiator

2. no gearbox / complicated transmission

3. no intake / exhaust manifold

4. doesnt need engine lube,

ofcourse, it can hit a bump, it can break an axle, elon musk would be fool to sell thosands of teslas sans a repair supply chain, car companies have been doing this for a century now .

manufacturing hell, putting too much stress on production lines , elon musk obsession with putting a computer on wheels and flash charging batteries +mass production.

these minor reliability scruples will be sorted out in due course of time

I have more than 1 skills to earn a living - (cars is just fun/timepass for me),

you seem to have been drinking the Tesla Koolaid a lot too, I know first hand how bad the Tesla supply chain is, Any manufacturer in the past that had such bad parts support and such poor serviceability either packed up or remained a microscopic niche.

live example.

Tesla authorised body shop got a Model S P60D for rear bumper replace and paint, It took Tesla 27 days to send a bumper to the shop.

Same shop gets a 2016 Chevy Impala for same job, the bumper is delivered within 4 hours and installed, prepped and painted the same day. Vehicle delivered next day with complete parking sensor recalibration etc etc.

Both brands are local to USA,

btw - Tesla has a 1 spd gearbox, and a diff (technically specced as transaxle) - its bolted to the drive motor, Seen it touched it, diagnosed it, replaced it. BTDT.

thats simply a reduction gear to tame the massive instantaneous torque generated by the tri phase induction motor . there arent any clutch assys or torque converters per se since the ac elec motor handles the torque variation itself through throttling of the pulse width voltages and currents .

regarding the repair job you mention, seems to me you are already working for tesla, good for you !

yes 1 spd box and differential in it. (transaxle - transmission + axle). There is no need for a TC or a clutch as the motor doesnt need to spin when car is stopped.

Yes I do know how the motor works - have had many boring headache sessions about it.. Nothing out of the ordinary, railways have been doing that since I was in shorts.
