Hard electric power steering, need help

My car's EPS felt hard a week back, felt a bit too hard we can say. Then the EPS light in the cluster came on. I thought its dead, bye bye EPS. But the next morning it was all fine once again, no light no hardness....

Have you checked the connectors? May be there is a current leakage...

i havent checked the connectors. the connector was last cleaned couple of months ago n theres no warning sign in the cluster. all the other electronics of the car work fine so i doubt it can be the battery amp rating. i think it might be losing some current from sumwhere. i guess its time i execute the plan i have in my mind for long. getting it grounded up!

I believe we have a separate ECU for the eps, right? How can we reset it, removing the battery method? Or?

To reset the EPS - there is a command in the Honda tester to do that. battery terminal removal does not help. the EPSCU has NVM. This lack of assist is due to

palming the steering too quickly which overheats the motor and the EPSCU cuts assist boost
driving a car that has bad wheels causing steering shake
EPSCU is gone stupid - and needs a reboot.

What do you mean by NVM.
How How much quick the palming has to be to overhear the motor.

NVM = Non-Volatile Memory.

There are codes related to some issues that are not stored in NVM. and as soon as the issue resolves, the self diagnostic at startup clears them.

However, some EPS and ABS related codes are stored in NVM and require a Honda Scan tool to clear out. There are ways to clear them like an ignition sequence involving turning the steering wheel to specified points as the MIL flashes while DLC pin 9 is shorted to ground. But best is to use scan tool.

The ELM327's these days cant clear them. Or atleast one has to write custom (vehicle specific) commands to use them to clear such DTC's

Now That's Troubling....I Doubt Clearing CODE Will Cost A Lot On Honda 3S I Guess

There's Should Be A Clear Way Of Resetting The Whole EPSCU Via Some Sort Of Jumper Shorting...

Ask Honda 3S If They Can Do That Using Tester For Good Price...!

yes there is a jumper sequence from the 16 pin connector, but if you dont follow correct procedure you might make it worse, the steering completely shuts down and goes to manual - which is a giant PITA.

Its a timed sequence of specific actions - I had a CF3 Accord delivered to me with such a problem in Karachi. it was electrician ustaadified including new "TOYOTA STARTER RELAY" jugaarbaazi in the wiring.

on the tester it takes 1 minute to reset and it is mostly required every now and then as people love to palm the steering extremely quick rather than use it as assist, they use it as a toy.

so what u r saying is in case of parallel parking etc if someone maneuvers the steering swiftly
the EPS can malfunction?

the way we Pakistanis use power steering is like the italians do - spin it like a top (lattoo) extremely quick a hydraulic system can survive this, the EPS is a different a different animal altogether the motor is not a high speed motor but a low speed high torque motor which can overheat very quickly.

The correct way to use this assist is to get the car a bit moving like you would in a manual steering. If you read the city owners manual it also warns not to play with the steering too much or the motor can overheat and the EPS will shut down.

I always turn the steering while the car is moving. But there is one thing I have the same car and the EPS sometimes feels less assisting than at times it feels more assisting why is that so. The terrain and speed is same ans turning speed is same. It also feels more assisting with increased air pressure in tires

That's Because Of Extreme Traffic And Agressive Driving STYLE Here In PAKISTAN...

Everyone Is In So Hurry That They Even Forget To Put Blinkers And Take A SHARP Turn...Forget The ASSIST And Handling Of Steering..

Its Putted There For Safety Reason And Survivor Of MOTOR And System But Should Have EASY Reset......!!

The system will reduce power when the motor overheats - it will only shut down when the driver still demands high steering wheel speed assist.

the tire pressure is directly related to steering wheel leverage, low pressure demands more assist as it has more friction to come over the slop of sagging tyres.

It is also experienced in old hydraulic system.

It solved itself i dont know how. i guess changing the battery helped...
