BYD’s Ambition in Pakistan

During the event, Kamran Kamal, CEO of Hubco, stated that Mega Motors Co and BYD will establish three state-of-the-art flagship stores in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. “We are going to establish 20 to 25 dealerships across the country in first three years,” Kamal said.

He further added that the company’s vision is that in next five years, every third Pakistani should own a BYD car and every Pakistani who desires to own a car should be able to buy a BYD vehicle. “We will built the first state-of-the-art New Energy Vehicle (NEV) assembly plant in Karachi,” the CEO stated, adding that the company will establish electric car charging stations in the major cities and on motorways/highways because we want our customer to drive without the range anxiety.

The CEO also vows to make Pakistan an export hub as the country has the potential to do so.

Launch Anticipation in Pakistan

To generate buzz, billboards featuring the BYD brand have been popping up in major cities across Pakistan. The partnership between BYD and Mega Motor Company aims to introduce a range of fully electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, catering to the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options.

BYD’s entry into the Pakistani market is a significant development. The company has rapidly risen to become the world’s leading seller of new energy vehicles in 2022 and 2023. With a track record of innovation and a commitment to sustainable mobility, BYD is poised to disrupt the local automotive industry.

Since achieving the milestone of producing its 1 millionth new energy vehicle in May 2021, BYD has continued to break records. In just over three years, the company has produced an impressive 8 million vehicles, cementing its position as a global leader in the EV space. The upcoming launch in Pakistan will showcase a selection of BYD’s latest models, offering consumers a glimpse into the future of electric transportation.

This is indeed an important milestone for Pakistani car market especially for the future of EVs in the country.

If this was an introduction to and showing of the capabilities of BYD, it should have emphasized a few important things to a market so heavily dominated by Japanese and European brands; almost to the exclusion of all other considerations.

BYD should have emphasized that 2008 they were the first ones to introduce the world to Plugin hybrid technology by making the first Plugin hybrid car.
BYD is the company Toyota turned to when they wanted to make their second EV the BZ3, or as people love to call it, the EV corolla. (Because their first EV SUV offering was subpar to say the least). In the BZ3, the technology is all BYD. Toyota only skins the car in Toyota fashion.
BYD’s Plugin hybrid technology is what Toyota will use to make three new models for the Chinese market. A market where Toyota and almost all other legacy auto makers are either in the process of shutting their doors or are near closing. Toyota is one of them as it cannot compete and/or meet the Chinese market’s heavy EV demand.

And lastly, if this was all about BYD flexing its muscles and showing its capabilities, it should have displayed and demonstrated the capabilities of the BYD YangWang U8 SUV and the BYD Yangwang U9 Hyper-car.
The U8 SUV comes in both EREV and pure EV flavors. The EREV has an ICE engine that acts as a power generator only and is a good solution for range anxiety. And the functions and off-road capability of this pure luxury SUV, the local darling such as the Prado or Cruiser cannot even dream of, such as self-parking, tank turns, and even a float on water system that enables the SUV to actually work on water like a boat for a limited period of time. It also boasts quality that easily matches any offering from the European brands.

And the U9 Hyper-car. That is a whole other ballgame. It is one of the fastest accelerating cars on the planet and it has functions, no other hyper-car can match. It has cutting edge suspension that literally dances and jumps. 😉 And even lets the car drive on three wheels. That is how good the system is at balancing the vehicle.

I’m sure what I have said will not sit well with the diehard fanboys of the Japanese and European brands. Just think, in Pakistan, even when it comes to EV and China’s clear world known dominance, those with money to burn always buy the very overpriced European EVs even though they are failing in a big way in China (and other markets) because they cannot match the Chinese technology and prices and even their EV software is not up to standards especially in the case of VW and Audi.

They themselves are striking up deals with these same Chinese rival brands to use their technology to stay relevant in the market (irony of ironies). But I’m sure this sounds very impossible to us because we grew up with these brands and any Chinese brand coming up to beat them is pure nonsense to us.

THAT IS THE MENTALTY BYD NEEDS TO CHALLENGE AND CHANGE IN ORDER TO SUCCEED HERE!

I hope they do consider to bring their most affordable offerings to the market for the people such as the BYD Seagull. Having said that, to show their capabilities and to show they mean business, I hope they also consider bringing at least the U8 SUV (EV and EREV) to the market here as an ultra-luxury offering. Even then, it will be cheaper than the Cruiser and a much better, capable and luxurious machine. You don’t have to take my word for it. Please see for yourself. 👍
