Hyundai Sonata to be Discontinued….Internationally!
And the news is that Hyundai Motor Company has decided to discontinue Hyundai Sonata as the company has no plans to develop the next generation of the mid-sized sedan. According to an official of the company, “The development project for the DN9 is not in progress.”
The sedan, also known as the national car of South Korea, was launched in 1985, and in the last 37 years, it became the best seller in the country. During its life span, it witnessed the whole process from weak to strong and from being unknown to famous.
Primary Reason
The primary reason behind the discontinuation is the sluggish sales. The situation became so worse that Hyundai closed the Sonata production line at Asan Plant. Moreover, due to low sales, Hyundai decided to skip a mid-cycle facelift and go for a complete model change, DN9, in 2023. However, it seems that DN8 is the last generation of the D-segment, in petrol at least. There are reports that Hyundai may launch this car in an electric variant.
But other reports are suggesting that Hyundai will launch a facelift of the car by the end of this year, which will keep the sedan afloat for the next couple of years. In short, there is no new generation of Sonata, but there could be a facelift in the near future.
The car was launched in Pakistan in July 2021, and it has proved to be a success in the local market. Since its launch, the D-segment sedan has registered good sales numbers, and it even crossed the sales of Hyundai Elantra at one point. Last month, Hyundai Nishat sold 293 units of the sedan. The number shows the popularity of the car among the masses.

Elantra .. except Price, can’t compete with Civic and Corolla and couldn’t grasp market and people interest

Hyundai Pakistan Story !!
Hyundai Sonata close his plant in Asan , it is a South Korea plant right ?
Maybe it isn’t selling well in South Korea but in USA they are around 80 000 Sold each year, i don’t think they will stop producing and selling the Sonata in other market.
It is important to mention wich market you are talking about, in Pakistan the Sonata maybe the best selling midsize sedan in the market.
@ Captain
For Hyundai Pakistan you almost right
But not for Elantra, Elantra low sales is explained by the big petrol engine a 2L instead of a 1.6 or 1.8, it is the same for Kia Sorento in Pakistan a 2.4L and a V6. Low sales dosn’t mean the succes isn’t here for bith Sorento and Elantra they are around 200 sales each month in Pakistan.
For Hyundai Tucson in April Tucson outsell Kia Sportage.
It is true the actual Sportage generation got a huge succes in Pakistan outselling Tucson.
But i think when the next generation of Tucson and Sportage will be launch it will be the Tucson who will easily outsell, the design is far better.
All 2L and above sedans should be banned as country is already facing dollar shortage due to huge import bill.
@Cool
Is the CBU cars who should be banned, as welll 2nd end imported cars.
I respect the opinions of all. Thank you
