Honda Is Not Recalling 2.2 Million 2016 Civic Cars Due To Engine Failure

There is a news circulating around the social media and internet here in Pakistan about Honda America recalling 2.2 million vehicles due to “engine failure issues”. We would like to inform our readers that the news is not correct. In the article, a report by Bloomberg has been quoted as source but Bloomberg was talking about Takata airbag failure.

The recall has nothing to do with the engine failure. Honda has recalled older cars from both Honda and Acura brands that were fitted with Takata airbags.

Also, Honda only had issues with their 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engines in their new 2016 Honda Civic cars, and not the 1.5-liter turbocharged engines. According to last reports, around 34000 of such vehicles with 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engines were released for sale to dealerships, and only one car has been sold to a customer. And we must mention this that the recall is a voluntary step by Honda and is not yet enforced by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

There are only two open Honda recalls and those are:

  1. Driver’s Frontal Air Bag Inflator May Rupture, 1 INVESTIGATION(S)
  2. Air Bag Control Unit Power Supply Corrosion

Both are related to airbags. You can find the list of open recalls on the website of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The department has yet to acknowledge Honda’s engine failure recall plan.

Honda had issued a stop-sale order for their 2.0-liter 2016 Civic as soon the problem was found. Honda found about the missing or mis-set piston rings rather quickly and issued the stop-sale order on January 30th. Honda, however, is preparing to launch the official recall to address the engine issue since replacement parts were not available at that time.

The tenth generation Honda Civic won the 2016 North American Car of the Year award and was applauded by the auto journalists and general auto community all around. The car is expected to launch in the second half of 2016 but new rumors suggest the launch has been moved to the end of 2016 or the start of 2017, but we don’t have any concrete information regarding that. So let’s wait and hope it’s launched in Pakistan on schedule that is September, like the past three generations that were launched in the same month.
