BYD New EVs Can Charge in Just 5 Minutes
With global auto industry adopting green technology swiftly, charging speed and range are common concerns for electric vehicle (EV) buyers, and BYD new system aims to solve these issues, making EVs more convenient for everyday use.
Shares of top Chinese EV manufacturer BYD reached a new high this week, rising by 4% to HK$401.40 in Hong Kong. This jump followed a claim from BYD’s CEO, Wang Chuanfu, that the company has developed a new charging system that can recharge an EV as quickly as filling up a gas-powered car. This breakthrough could put BYD ahead of major EV brands like Tesla and Mercedes-Benz.
Fast Charging – The Breakthrough
The new charging system can add 470 kilometers of range in just five minutes, a huge improvement over current EV charging times. However, this technology relies on having enough voltage at charging stations, so it may not work everywhere right away.
To support this new charging system, BYD plans to set up 4,000 fast-charging stations. This comes as China plans to build 460,000 new public EV chargers in 2025, accounting for about two-thirds of the world’s total. By the end of the year, China will have around 2.1 million EV chargers, making it easier for people to use electric vehicles.
Starting in April, two of BYD’s popular SUVs, priced under $40,000, will come with the new fast-charging technology. This will make them even more attractive to consumers who want affordable cars with quick charging.
BYD Global Expansion & Market Share
The carmaker is also expanding globally, with new factories in Southeast Asia, Europe, and South America. In early 2025, the company made up 16% of all Chinese car exports, showing its growing influence outside of China. At home, the automaker holds 27% of the EV market and has strong shares in both battery EV and plug-in hybrid cars.
With innovations like the “God’s Eye” self-driving system, BYD is challenging major companies like Tesla. As more people worldwide switch to electric cars, BYD is becoming a major player in the future of transportation.
