Oil is a very carefully formulated product, and as usual, customers' "research" is limited to weighing marketing and labeling claims against each other.
My personal choice is whatever is cheapest. Semi-synthetic oils have a majority mineral-based component, the manufacturer doesn't tell us in exactly what proportion they blend it with synthetic oil. They might say things like "synthetic formula" and "synthetic technology" but that doesn't explain anything.
They are both API SN-RC, Havoline Formula 10W-30 adds ILSAC GF-5. Compare the data for both and they are essentially interchangeable.
MOTUL is notorious for this, with Ester and PAO all over everything for a mediocre, overpriced Gp3 oil with a relatively low TBN, while Mobil1 and Shell have quietly been using esters and PAO in their formulations for years without making a fuss.
My suggestion: Shell Helix HX7 Plus 5W-30 - which is API SP, but also ACEA A3/B4. I would take an HTHS > 3.5, which offers objectively better protection, over an ILSAC rating.
