That V10 in the M5 is something else, a freind of mine bought a cheap one (had an entire essay of errors in the the DME/ECU) - so being crazy idiots that we are, we pulled out the engine and gearbox. Shipped the box to be redone (I dont have the ZF tooling) and tore down the engine to redo.
All in all - just parts and supplies cost about 15K USD (including redoing the autobox) - labour free as we are crazy idiots (mentioned above) - It has no problems now, and behaves perfect (disabled some features though) - When that engine starts to sing, you best have really good driving reflexes because it will accelerate like a literal rocket - while gulping fuel like it was free candy.
averaged out that it was burning a gallon every 6 or 7 miles (very good for this car), But we had a permanent grin plastered to our faces and the exhilaration is beyond nuts.
Forgot - that it eats rear tires for breakfast, lunch and dinner (even without burnouts - the sheer torque erodes them off)
but - they are not built for 3rd world countries where a car is bought for longevity. Thats why toyota is there.. buy a corolla, fill it up with cheap fuel, cheap oil and cheap tires.. drive intergalatic mileage and it will still run.
Toyota is making a moon vehicle too - so expect to get feedback from the moon for the next 50 years, after that it will probably just need a cheap tune up to make it work for another century.. BMW should not make the moon rover, it will be a very nice showpiece after lapping the moon track twice.
