Speedometer Needle Issue
Around the late 1970's the speedometer cable broke. Back then we did not have the internet and one could not go online and order parts. At the time the car was in Karachi and I went to a local motor cycle cable repair guy and had a cable made. But that cable had some problem and it did not work properly. I the car was travelling at 40mph, the needle would waive from 35 - 45mph.
Recently, I have been able to get the correct cable for this car from my UK parts supplier and fitted it.
THE WORKSHOP MANUAL PROCETURE TO REPLACE THE CABLE
I initially thought I could do a shortcut and replace the cable without removing the floorboards and transmission cowl and carpets. But that was not possible. So it seems that I have to follow the workshop manual to the letter.
Carpets out exposing the floor board
Transmission cowl is lifted to expose the gearbox end of the cable - red arrow
Floor board is out
Next was to unscrew the bad cable from the back of the speedo meter and tie a piece of rope to the speedo end and pull out towards the gear box.

Once the bad cable was pulled out, the rope was transferred to the new cable and pulled back so that it appeared behind the meter.
The new cable can be seen up to the speedometer along the fire wall
Here is a video of the speedometer showing before and after new cable is fitted. Unfortunately I did not have a video of the meter with the bad cable except a very short video of just 3 seconds. I have joined the 3 second video to the other longer one I took after repair. Carefully watch the first 3 seconds and compare to the rest of the video where I am testing the speedo at 10, 20 and 25 mph.
See the speedo meter needle in first 3 seconds and compare to rest of video
In the video above it can be seen how the needle was waiving around the 20mph mark when the bad cable was fitted vs steady needle with the new cable. Happy with the results.
