Unimogs have very high ground clearance made possible by portal gears that allow the axles and transmission to be higher than the tires' centers. Unimogs also feature a flexibleframe that allows the tires a wide range of vertical movement to allow the truck to comfortably drive over extremely uneven terrain, even boulders of one metre in height. They are equipped with high visibility driving cabs to enable the operator to see the terrain and more easily manipulate mounted tools. The newest Unimog models can be changed from left-hand drive to right-hand drive in the field to permit operators to work on the more convenient side of the truck. The ability to operate on highways enables the Unimog to be returned to a home garage or yard to thwart vandalism.

(Current) Our Military made the decision that Unimogs are no longer required in Service and started the gradual auction process in 2006-07 which reached its full speed on 2011. By now it is assumed that over 90% of Unimogs 421 are gone, out of approximately 6,500 vehicles only 20-25 have reported as survived, rest of them were chopped & eaten by the local Metal masons (mog killers) who have an eye to see metal in all machines in terms of KGs, they can never see what functions a machine can deliver.<o:p></o:p>

A really nice effort,i wanted to add one thing for information of readers that since u mentioned that local metal masons are taking this vehicle as chopped because they want metal of this vehicle,its not true because 70% of the UNIMOG were of MAP (mutual aid programme) store and when our country was getting it,it was written in contract deal that these vehicles of MAP store will not be handed over in auction as complete piece to civil setup,thats why they are bound to cut the vehicles and then take it away.for those vehicles they dont get vouchers to get it registered rather they get vouchers showing them as scrap in kgs.the vehicle u got must not be of MAP store.
