About a decade ago, the automobile industry started developing smaller size engines in order to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions of cars. It was ensured that these smaller engines will be equal to or even more powerful as compared to the bigger sized engines. These small sized engines are compact, especially if the 3-cyliner configuration is adopted. The engine also enhances the front-rear weight balance of the vehicles. So, all in all these smaller but powerful engines are a win-win for both cars and the owners.

With the futuristic planning and policies, the parent company of Proton decided to develop a new engine, based on this modern technology. The company took this step a decade ago in collaboration with Volvo. With years of research and development, the companies developed the powerful 1.5-litre TGDi engine. Proton decided to introduce this specific engine with 7-Speed DCT Transmission, making it a great combo. This power house of an engine is so reliable and performance efficient that it won the China Automotive Industry Awards for Science and Technology on October 28, 2020, which is considered as the ‘Nobel Prize’ in the Chinese auto industry.

This newly developed engine has all the traits of a modern engine which include light weight, compact, highly reliable, powerful and most importantly fuel efficient. And because of these qualities, the engine produces 175 hp and 225Nm torque, making it compete with engines bigger in size.

The manufacturers of this engine have also focused on the noise issue of the engine due to the fact that 3-cylinder is noisier than 4-cylinder. The engineers of 1.5L TGDi engine have worked hard to bring down its noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to the level of the 4-cylinder engine.

Proton is offering this powertrain engine in Proton X70, which was launched in Pakistan earlier this year. The statistics and evidence show that it is one of the best engines available globally. This means that Proton X70 is fuel efficient, powerful, and is equipped with powerful driving performance. This SUV is one to look out for in the Pakistani market.

My good author, Volvo cars have never been seen on even a smaller scale in Pakistan, they may be being used on a mini scale but not in an apparent manner to make their presence known. Therefore, it still remains to be seen how well this engine would do in Pakistan, in particular the maintenance cost required by engine after 50,000 to 70,000 kilometers, besides, please note in Pakistan warranty becomes void in cases that are otherwise accepted globally so 150,000 kilometer warranty is not unique selling point as far as person who has already suffered in this regard is concerned. I guess this reason is supporting even Cultus’s sale, is not it priced closer to Saga?
