In a surprising turn of events, Proton has officially launched its much-anticipated 2024 Proton S70 earlier than expected, breaking away from the traditional December debut. The incubation period for this sedan was remarkably short, with official details and images emerging on November 1, swiftly followed by a media preview.

Four Distinct Variants

The Proton S70 comes in four distinct variants, catering to diverse preferences: Executive, Premium, Flagship, and Flagship X. The pricing ranges from RM73,800 for the entry-level Executive, which is equivalent to around USD 15,800, to RM94,800 for the top-tier Flagship X, which is equivalent to around USD 20,300, all on-the-road without insurance.

The Great Debate: B or C Segment?

The S70 has sparked a debate—is it a B- or C-segment sedan? While based on the Geely Emgrand and sharing the BMA platform with the X50, Proton introduces a twist by labeling it a C-segment sedan. Equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and a dual-clutch gearbox, it aims to compete with the likes of the Honda Civic. However, its pricing aligns it with popular B-segment sedans like the Honda City.

Under the hood, the S70 boasts a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, delivering 150 PS and 226 Nm of torque. This engine, borrowed from the X50, ensures a spirited performance, claiming 0-100 km/h in around nine seconds. A strategic move by Proton, utilizing the existing engine from the X50, provides better economies of scale.

Proton S70 Local Touch

Proton’s emphasis on local input is evident, with 453 new parts developed with 283 local Malaysian suppliers. While retaining the Emgrand’s core features, the S70 showcases Malaysian design elements, including a sleek grille combining ‘Infinite Weave’ and ‘Ethereal Bow’ cues.

Proton S70Tech-Packed Flagship

The Flagship variant steals the spotlight with a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), offering features like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Warning. The top-tier variant also introduces a sunroof and dashcam for those seeking an extra touch of luxury.

Comfort Over Sport

During a brief test, the S70 revealed its focus on comfort rather than sporty performance. The sedan, tuned for Malaysian roads, promises a smooth and composed ride. However, the dual-clutch transmission’s leisurely gear shifts and audible engine noise at low speeds raise questions about its premium claims.

Proton S70 Rivals and Choices

Proton strategically positions the S70 against popular B-segment sedans, offering a larger body, turbo engine, and advanced features at a competitive price. While it may not outshine the Honda Civic in terms of refinement, it poses a strong contender against the Honda City and Toyota Vios.

Nice design, the engine is the same as under the hood of Proton X-70, i don’t know the opinion on X-70, since it is available under the hood of Volvo XC-40 it prove to be capable but show limit when the car is loaded.
